This quarter I took a microbiology (3oo level) class for fun as P/NP. This I also quarter I suffered from an illness that put me in bed for nearly 3 weeks. I was unable to really get caught up in the class because I was always behind (Obv. taking more classes too that I have to spend time on catching up that actually count for a grade). I just finished the final and I will be on the boarder line of passing the class. If I don't pass the class and it shows up as "NP" on my transcript how bad will this look? The reason I decided to P/NP this class is because it is only a 1 quarter class where as the more advanced one is 2 quarters. I will be taking the 400 level microbiology class for a grade because it is required in my major. Will schools not look at it as badly if they see a "NP" in a 300 level microbiology class but an A in a 400 level microbiology class?

If you were truly sick for three weeks I would recommend you work with the university to get a W for the class. A NP will look bad. It's all qualitative because it won't affect your GPA, but asking if flunking a pass/no pass class is like asking if they won't like it if you flunk a normal class. Of course they care! Doing better in a higher class will help, but it won't erase the previous mistake.
