Im a P2 pharmacy student at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. I'm in the midst of an 80 hour rotation at one of my hospital sites and after doing rounds with the clinical pharmacist on the floor and the attending physician and his residents I'm having serious thoughts about medical school! I know I'm pretty deep in the pharm D program but the exposure to hospital practice I've had on this rotation has been a real eye opener. It almost seems irrational to consider trying medical school at this point (or at least finishing the remaining 2 years of my program and applying after my pharm D) but my curiosity has brought me here in regards to applying. And if it turns out that I really don't have any chance of receiving interviews for a DO program (against all you stacked applicants out there) then I can scratch this idea from my head and feel satisfied practicing the clinical art of pharmacy. So here it goes..and maybe its just for mental rest..would I have a shot applying?
cGPA: 3.400
sGPA: not sure how to locate it on my transcript so I will have to calculate. It will be very close to my cGPA however.
- Chain pharmacy intern for 2+ years and PA state licensed
- 80 hr Community shadow at independent pharmacy (will have preceptor as reference)
-80hr Institutional Practice shadow at VA Medical Center Philadelphia
- >50hr volunteer in inpatient Pharmacy at VA Medical Center back in my U2 & P1 year
My EC's are lacking in which im only slightly active in ASHP (american society of health sytems pharmacists) and have recently started a new group regarding drug information in pharmacy industry where I will be a board member this spring. Aside from that, I've played a ton of intramurals since they're not too serious here at my school but nonetheless extra-curricular.
I understand my GPA is on the lower end and I'm sure if I knew I was looking to apply for medical school back when I first enrolled at USP it would be a little higher. However, at the end of this year I will have completed: 2 semesters Pharmaco Therapeutics, 2 semesters pharmacology, 2 semesters pharmaceutics, non-prescription therapeutics, 2 semesters physiology, immuno, molec bio, biochem and the rest of the prereqs needed to enter P1. Im at 124 credits right now too.
This all may not mean much either without having taken the MCATs but I'm a pretty strong test taker and did extremely well in orgo/bio/chem ect...
