I am interested in becoming a mid-level (PA/ACNP) particularly in some surgical specialty. I was wondering, what are the work hours like? I don't mind taking call, working nights, weekends, holidays etc. but I don't want to work 100 hours a week. I want to have time with my family. To be honest, that's one BIG reason I want to become a mid-level. If I wanted to devote my entire life to surgery, I'd be a surgeon.

A friend of mine is a surgical PA trained at Cornell. He works three 12-hr shifts per week and makes $90K/year plus full state benefits.

Are hiring for positions with more rational surgical hours (Some heart hospitals, for example). In general, surgical PAs tend to put in more hours. When you do the math, the compensation is actually lower. I would consider an outpatient surgery center, or subspecialty clinic that does lots of procedures (For best combination of hours + compensation).
