I am a PA. I've worked in Emergency Medicine since graduating Yale's PA school in 1999. I knew at the time I didn't enjoy human medicine, but at that time, I was married and the goal was to get out of school, make a good living, and practice medicine.

Since then, I have divorced my wonderful, beautiful wife (I'm gay) and have decided to do what I REALLY want to do, and have wanted to do since I was a kid, that being veterinary medicine. I'm leaving a job that makes $100,000+ per year to do what want. At some point in your life, you have to stop waking ap and going to work with the sole motivation being that it pays your mortgage. I bet a lot of you can identify.

I've been accepted at Iowa State University and am 4th alternate at University of Wisconsin. Either way, I know I am going to have the privilege of working in animal medicine, and that thrills me!

Congrats to all who have gone through this LONG process and have been accepted to vet school.

If anyone has questions regarding being a PA, PLEASE let me know. Its a great profession, just not for me personally.

My best,

Brad

I have a few questions for you Brad:

1)Why didn't you just initially go into vet medicine, since that was your passion since childhood, and you knew that you wouldn't be happy as a PA?

2)No disrespect intended, but if you knew you were gay, why would you end up marrying a woman knowing full well that your marriage would never work out, and that you'd eventually get divorced?

i guess i didn't think we needed to go to so much school. my priority was my family, not my career.

it wasn't like that at all. i wasn't out, and i loved my wife dearly, and where i come from, you graduate high school, go to college, get married, and live the perfect american life. i didn't come out as gay until i was with my wife for 10 years and couldn't live a lie anymore.

Oh alright, that makes sense. Where I come from (Canada) gay marriage is legal, and I guess more people are willing to come out of the closet.

Sometimes I wish I was born and raised in the US though. As much as I love Canada, I just feel as though there is so much more oppurtunity to succeed in the US, even though Canada is essentially America Jr.

That IS so disrespectful. What is it to you? It's a personal choice. What does that have to do with anything????????? Good for you Brad. One of my good friends used to be married to an endocrinologist who built a practice with several doctors, got enough courage to tell everyone he was gay, after having a child, sold his practice and is just trying to come to terms still. I respect that. I feel bad for my friend who is now married to my good buddy because of all the drama she had to go through though.

Actually, his personal choice has affected another person's life, so it does matter. Assuming you're a male... how would you like it if the woman you married, who you built your life around, knew she was a lesbian and would eventually divorce you even before she married you? Would that not crush you? That woman and her dishonesty to disclose her sexuality would ruin your life.

Start thinking about other people for once. 👎

You guys are looking into this too much. I married my wife because I loved her. Period. Gender made no difference when I was 23 years old. I knew I loved her, she was my best friend, and I didn't go into it knowing we would eventually divorce. That was always my biggest fear, actually, because I knew we wouldn't be able to continue being with each other. That being said, her life is far from ruined. We've been divorced 3 years now, she has a wonderful boyfriend and is happy, I have a wonderful boyfriend and am happy, and we are fine with each others choices. We're Will & Grace, so to speak.
😀

Anyway, enough about me being gay. Next topic............

Who is better? Cats or dogs?

Pshh. I'm not getting sucked into that kind of controversy. 😉

So... Yale. Sweet. You graduated in 1999, so maybe you can't really speak to the whole "how do I get into Yale PA" question at this point. Still, any words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

I'm finishing up pre-reqs, and then it's back home for me, to my ER tech job, maybe one more class to round things out for certain programs' requirement lists, and then GRE and application time. Yale is "on my list," you could say.
