Hi, I am planning on applying to PA school as soon as i finish several more prerequisites. Does anyone know how to shadow a doctor or anywhere in new york where that is possible? Someone was telling me that before she applied to PA school she shadowed a doctor and even went into surgery with him, but she lives all the way in California so I was wondering if anyone knew about that kind of thing in New York... Please let me know! Thanks 🙂

Is there a reason you desire to shadow a physician rather than a PA?

In either case you two options, contact a hospital/clinic directly and consult them about the procedure for shadowing a doc or PA currently employed there, or (probably easier but with very different exposure/experience), contact a physician's private practice office. You need simply pick one, I think proximity to where you work, live, or go to school as being easiest, and call. Either they will tell you they don't have the time or inclination, or they'll be open to it. There are no restrictions on who or where you can shadow except as decided by the administration/physician (regardless of specialty, even surgery).

I have a personal bias for Queens as that's where I used to live, but I'm certain the options are the same in any borough (or outside of the city for that matter). One other thing I'd add is that even if you have an interest in a specialty of medicine already, try to shadow a GP/FP doc/PA as well as a specialist (if you are interested in one or more). Best of luck with finding someone, I'm sure you'll have no trouble.
