I know this is a forum for residents/physicians but wanted to join and get some input/ideas for local tenums as a PA. I'm currently working at an ER residency site through a big corporate ED group (it's god awful working for this corporate group, don't even get me started) for the past 6 years and have built up some good experiences thanks to the residents and attendings. I did some minor traveling for part-time gigs in my state and very much enjoyed it but wanted to advance and potentially do a full-time gig of traveling -- where I can control my own schedule and make more money. I tried extensively doing some research for local tenum positions for PAs but google seems to continually direct me to the big corporate locums group like CompHealth, Barton, Weatherby, all to which when I inquire about the hourly rate, seems a bit low (FYI: currently make $67/hr, these companies are offering similarly the same rate) Some 1099 companies offer $85-90/hr but after you deduct the taxes, it's actually lower than what I'm making now. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips as far as what company to contact/send my CV to? Or know of any groups that have potentially a "travel team?" Thanks!

I don't know that you're going to find much higher than that. My girlfriend is an EM NP and back when she was looking around (SE), $95/hr was about the highest she could find in this area as an IC. Your rate is about standard for most CMG ED W2 PA/NP salaries here in the SE ($65-75/hr). How much were you expecting to make? I know one NP that I used to work with who could make significantly more moonlighting in Alaska at some of these remote EDs as the sole provider but I'm not sure that's the kind of job you should be looking for...

Don't know of any EM travel teams of midlevels. It's kind of a lousy level of training for a travel position. A physician can theoretically cover everything, while PAs and NPs are pretty restricted about where they can be deployed (hospital bylaws, supervisory agreements, etc.). If you're going to short staff an ED, it's easier to do so with one or two docs, versus trying to place a PA.

Those locums rates are incredibly low. PM me, but in my neck of the woods PAs are making much more than that. I’ve seen anywhere between 75.00 an hour on the lowest end and up to 150.00 (the 150 end is NOT common but it’s possible for the dangerously fast ones on bonuses) depending on bonuses as employees, not independent contractors. Unfortunately I can’t give you any advice on where else to look because it has been my experience that those groups you mention are offering insulting low offers (which is why the positions never get filled!). Don’t do it!

If a company is willing to pay a PA that much they need to just get a FP with some EM training. I say that as an ex-PA

We do have some of those. I don't know for sure how much they get paid but I don't think it's far off from the other docs.

Dang. That pay low. Although, when I was moonlighting at an urgent care as a resident, I was paid $80-125, I guess, that's sorta fair market value. But still low, ER PA/NP seeing level 3s should get $100/hr + productivity
