Hey so I'm new to SDN and wanted some opinions on whether I should take the PA or DO route. So I just finished my undergrad with all intentions of going to PA school. But now I'm thinking about possibly making the shift to DO but I don't know how plausible it actually is. I graduated with a History degree since I like history and decided why not, and took most of my science prereqs as my electives for PA school. I have a 3.1 science and 3.5 overall gpa. I haven't taken the MCAT since PA school takes the GRE. Also, I would have to take physics or biochem since I didn't need it for PA. I have a good amount of volunteer hours and was in a neurosurgery research lab for a year and might get published from it. If I we're to take physics and biochem and get good grades and MCAT above lets say 27 do you think I would have a chance at DO or should I stick to PA?

They are different jobs. Don't pick a career based on what has more or less admissions hoops to jump through. A 27 can get into PA or DO school, all else being equal.

That science GPA is a bit low. Until you take the MCAT, the if you have a shot type question, is useless. If you are able to get a high percentile on the MCAT, yes you have a shot. If not, no.

The main question right now is what's driving you to go into medicine.

If it's a strong driving force with a strong desire to become a physician, then go and take the MCAT and ask this question again.

If it's not a strong desire, but rather that looks cool too, type deal, stick with you PA path. It's hell of a lot easier, both in training and actual job stress.

I think the big difference is whether you are willing to spend the next 7+ years in training, or if you would rather be done in 2 years. PA to me is more like a job, where you come in, do your work, and leave. Whereas being a physician seems like something you can't really get away from once you are in it.
