Pacific Pride Day at UoP!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'll be there!!

Ah yes Pacific pride day, one of the many pride days in San Fran.

Pzak - Glad to hear a fellow SDNer is going to be attending! Are you coming by yourself or are ya bringing anyone? My girlfriend and my parents are going to be attending as well. They are really interested in checking out the school as they have only seen it from the outside by car. I hope to see you there! 🙂

Pride DAY?? I'm shocked Pacific wasted a whole day. They need to cut it down to 'Pride 18 Hours'.

I am going down by myself, my parents have already seen it. I was actually hoping to meet a few of my future classmates. Have you figured out your living situation yet? I know 3 people currently going there right now, and I think im going to move in with them.

Amazingly, I actually have figured out my living situation. My girlfriend and I are going to be living together, and we already put a deposit down on a 1-bedroom apartment a block away from the school. Our lease starts on April 15th and my girlfriend has been interviewing for jobs in the city the past few weeks. It's crazy, you can see my place from the sim lab! I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing but only time will tell. 🙂

Every day and night that you're stuck doing lab work, you can longingly look down the window and see where you would rather be: home  😛

Exactly! I haven't decided if that is going to be comforting or torture. Most likely a little bit of both. But either way, at least it's not very far to walk in the rain.

Hey, how much is the rent for 1-bedroom apt. in that building? Any other vacancies?

Well, first and foremost, just like any apartment in San Francisco there is the good, the bad, and the ugly.

GOOD: One block north of UoP. I got a corner apartment facing south and west so my bedroom window looks right at the school (which might be bad for some people who don't want to wake up staring at where they were until midnight the previous evening 🙂 ). Awesome 40s style building with that classic San Fran character. HUGE master bedroom, decent-sized living room, and a good-sized kitchen w/dining area. The bedroom and living room are all hardwood floors. The kitchen has that checkered black and white old-school tile with a gas stove and oven. There are two walk-in closets and three bay windows with a partial view of the golden gate and a view of the rest of the city. Really quiet place for studying since a lot of tenants are older (two different tenants have been there for over 20 years). Super nice building manager.

BAD: There are only six in-garage parking spots. I doubt we will ever have access to any of these in the three years I'm planning to be there. Going to have to fend for ourselves with street parking (this really only affects my girlfriend though). No dishwasher (not that big of a deal as I don't have one now). No in-apartment laundry, the machines are down on the first floor (again not a big deal)

UGLY: Well the only truly ugly thing is the price, $1850 a month.

I know it sounds insane but it's actually not that bad for Pacific Heights stuff north of the school. My girlfriend and I checked out a variety of 1-bedroom places ranging from $1500 - $2100 and this was the best that we found by a fairly significant margin. Plus, a lot of the $1500-1700 stuff is like 12 blocks south of the school past Geary where the neighborhood starts to get a bit sketchy. We checked out all of the UoP recommended places (Webster towers, Filmore Center, etc.) and let's just say we were not impressed with any of them.

As far as availability is concerned... We just happened to come across this four day old listing on Craigslist that didn't have any pictures. It was so close to the school that we decided to check it out. Low and behold, we both thought it was fantastic and got an application quick-style. Right now, I don't believe that there are any vacancies, but the manager told us that three other units have UoP Dental students in them. There is a good chance that one of those might be in their last year. All I can do is keep you posted if I hear of somebody moving out in the next three months.

I hope that helps!

Thanks for your detailed reply! Even though I wasn't the one who asked, it was very helpful to read about your house-searching experience. Housing in SF is a pain, I just hope I get into the school's housing. Anyone know when they'll notify us about the lottery?

Thanks Fulcrum77, that was extremely helpful.

Unfortunately even if rooms do open up, $1850 is a bit out of my price range. I think student loan only budgets around $1300 for off-campus housing. UoP will notify us of dorm lottery by mid April, according to the info they sent in the mail. It would be awesome to live in housing -- it's so much cheaper than off-campus with security, gym, common rooms, parking (lottery too), lab, and classmates to study and hang with.

Street parking's not too bad if you have a residential permit. You just have to change the registration on the car to match the address. Just remember where you parked your car and watch out for street cleaning days. The other part that sucks though, is that I hope the car's not too nice, because the bumpers are gonna get trashed parking on the street. People in SF don't give a crap and will bump into your car repeatedly trying to fit in spaces.

Actually, with the estimated off-campus loans financial aid sheet that UoP sent us a few weeks ago, the total monthly amount that we get is $1925 ($17,325 per 9 month loan period divided by 9). For me, this just covers the rent and a small bill. I agree though, If I were single this would never work, but since my girlfriend is going to be working full time this gives us some flexibility. For single peeps, it's pretty hard to beat the student housing, unless you find a bunch of people to live with to bring down the average cost of rent.

That's some good info sherm. I will have my girlfriend look into changing her registration address immediately. We're bringing her car so I don't really care if it gets trashed. JK But realistically it's not that nice of a car (Suzuki Vitara) so I doubt either one of us is going to shed a tear if it gets a few scrapes.

So I guess Pzak and I are the only ones going then?

Well, I'll be there guys - but as a tour guide!

We had our debriefing this week about the day, I'm sure you guys will have a lot of fun!

About housing... you will not regret being able to see the school - it's soooo convenient to be close. I can see my place from room 308.

Watch out for street sweeping, they've gotten my boyfriend twice - $40 bucks a piece!

See you soon!

twice is nothing i think i'm up to 6 and a fire lane hehe

$40 a pop for a street cleaning ticket!?!? That's highway robbery. I hope they only clean the streets once a month, right?

Nick, I forgot the worst - $50 for not curbing your tires - and it was hardley even a slope!

Yes, it is expensive, but at least it's not NYC. They're quick to boot you here too, I think you only need like 3 outstanding tickets. Street cleaning is every week, so PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIGNS.

Now that's pretty ridiculous. I didn't even know they would ticket for not curbing the wheel. I guess DPT must think everyone's other car in Pac Heights is a Ferrari.
