Well, I'm packing up my office today to start school on Monday. Up until now I haven't given the change in pace from work to school much thought after the initial decision. After living in the "working world" for the last 7 or 8 years, I am now feeling the first pang of anxiety in my stomach. Not overwhelming, but just enough to keep me from being overconfident in my new endeavors. I didn't think I'd be nervous, because normally I've got it "all figured out". I'm a little nervous, and it feels good in a way. I'm going to finish packing up at the office, enjoy my three day weekend, and start my new career. Yeesh...big statement. To all the career changers out there, (and all the rest), good luck, and see you in the dental world😉

I remember that feeling. I worked for a couple years as an engineer before I started D-school. The hardest part was the immediate income hit. If you like dentistry, then you've made a great decision. Im now a couple years out and wouldn't trade what Im doing for anything (except maybe a 100% cosmetic practice-3days/week😀) GREAT PROFESSION!!

I worked in the financial field for about 7 years. Last Friday was my last day sitting in a cube! I too am nervous and have that 'did I do the right thing' knot in my stomach. Of course I had the 'God please get me out of this cube before I....' feeling for 6 1/2 of the last 7 years.

It feels good. I am nervously looking forward to the challenge.

Great thread! I'm also a career changer, but am applying for the 2008 cycle. My biggest concern is getting my affairs in order prior to entrance. Acceptance at my state school would make things so much easier, but I guess I'll have to wait and see on that. Good luck to all of you.

hi oceanDMD. i'm currently a 3rd year dental student contemplating what direction I want to go in after dental school. I think i'm really interested in cosmetic dentistry and wouldn't mind doing 100% cosmetic like yourself. Can you give insight into what your day is like and the steps to achieving working at a 100% cosmetic dental practice for 3days/week? Thanks!

Good luck Lemming... let me know if you need any tips on surviving Benninger (don't worry, he's great). Bring some old shoes tomorrow, you'll dive right in!

I have some questions for you and anyone elese who have been out of school for awhile and are returning to dental or medical school. I want to return to dental school, but I have to take the DAT. I do have to take another physics, and organic chem. I and II. Did you have to take any refresher courses to prepare yourself. I feel like I don't remember gen chem. and also there may be some new things that are being taught. What did you do in preparation. I do work in healthcare (physical therapy), so i have taken tons of science and math but that was over 9 years ago.

I went back to school after 20 years and retook calculus and physics before I decided to do dentistry, then I switched to Biology, O chem, etc. It took me 2 years but I got through all the dental prereqs that I didn't have in engineering school. Last year I couldn't even spell "dental student" but now I are one.

Get a look at a DAT prep book and see what you remember and take a few practice DATs and see what you need to study.
