hi i wonder if its wise (or not) to get paid for rotations?
i understand we're not suppose to get paid. however,
the program is offering payment and i wonder if i can
accept it? will there be any risk involve with the school? board?

Wow that's weird, usually the school pays the rotation site to take you on as a free intern. Why are they offering? Doesn't make sense unless this a new site that you set up and they don't know how it works....

Is the rotation actually afilliated with the school? You can get paid for internships if they're not associated with the school. For example, I did a summer internship after my P1 year with Walgreens and got paid for it. However, it wasn't considered an experiential rotation for my school that would count toward my degree.

I don't know about other states, but it's a rule for the TX State Board of Pharmacy that interns don't get paid for their experiential hours; you have to have so many hours of unpaid experiential hours to be applied to your degree.

If that's a rule for your state board, I would highly recommend not accepting pay; otherwise, if they found out, you would either have to redo your experiential or maybe worse.

I can't speak for every state, but getting paid for a clinical rotation (during your p4 year) is a conflict of interest. (Your preceptor would both be your boss and giving you a grade.) I have never heard of anyone being paid for a clinical rotation, but that does not mean it does not happen.

Are you talking about 4th year clerkships or rotations during your first few years of school?

im currently a paid intern with CVS so what i meant
was 4th year rotations. WAGs are offering summer
rotations for 4th year students and getting paid and
im interested in it. though i understand you're not
suppose to get paid? so i dont know how it goes..
i dont wanna get paid and risk conflicts with the board.
so i wanted to know if ppl are getting away with it? = )

You are misunderstanding the Walgreens program.

I thought you were talking about your 4th year rotations. You can't get paid for those, but a summer internship between semesters of course you can get paid. Why not, if your worried about hours to become licensed, shouldn't your school provide enough unpaid intern hours with your rotations? what school are you going too?

i misread the WAGs program as they misused the
word rotations. thanks to pharmella for pointing that
out. thats the reason i was confused how WAGs can
offer paid rotations.. as there is no such thing. .^_

but to answer the question,

dont get paid....you will get into trouble if they find out and might not get to finish on time.

just not worth it. I was offered and declined....although it was VERY tempting.

This is also because ACPE requires it to be this way as part of your school's accreditation. The school could get in trouble if they were truly allowing P4's to be paid and get school credit at the same time.
