Hello Everyone. I am a current ACGME pain fellow going in to the big bad world in July next year. My wife is applying to a fellowship as well and we are trying to decide her rank list. My question is which job markets would be the best for a starting fellow like me? Her current choices are St. Louis, Detroit, and Chicago. In my mind the smaller the city the less the competition and the better job I can secure. As of now we are ranking St louis > Detroit> and Chicago. Is this the right way to think about things? Does anyone else have more insight on these markets? P.S for her fellowship she would be happy with any of those 3 cities so we are trying to factor in other things like my job. Also I have not started heavily looking into jobs but initial searches on ASRA, gasworks, AAPMR, doccafe, practice works have not been that helpful. Any other places you guys recommend I should start? I probably will start cold calling places once we know where we are going but just curious to see how you guys have had success with/

Current fellow in the job hunt.

Websites have been tough. Some generalities I have noticed:

LinkedIn - Smattering of all jobs, but more academic jobs tend to post openings here.

Practicelink - Medium and small town hospital employee jobs. Also some gigs that seem likely to be ripoffs in Florida and Las Vegas.

Gasworks - tends to mirror practice link.

Doccafe Has a bunch of weird locums stuff that gets in the way of finding real job listings.

Private practices don’t often list availabilities the typical websites. Cold calling in a particular area often will reveal private practices looking to add people. Cold calling hospitals has been much much lower yield. They’re much more likely to list an opening online.

People mentioned reps, but my my program isn’t in bed with industry as much so they haven’t been that helpful.

Connections and cold calling private practices have netted me the most discussions.

Suggest wife picking fellowship she likes the most, and you adapting to wherever you she winds up. This is based on over 30 years of happy marriage. Previous to that a divorce.

Hahah that's true. But she truly likes all 3 of those places for fellowship.

What’s your plan after your wife finishes her fellowship? Most places will look at your situation and assume you are moving after a year and that it’s not worth hiring you. If you guys have a target city you might be better off getting a job there first. Or settle for doing locums until you both have firm plans.

fellowship is 2 years so I am not sure if I want to do locum for that long. Plan is to move down to Texas so for sure will not be staying.

Current fellow. I started looking 6-8 months ago and have been talking with groups since Late July.

Signing contract soon with my dream practice set up. It came through contacts with my program leadership reaching out directly.

Other strong job opportunities came from industry and device reps and interacting at courses.

Recruiters have been utterly useless. Gaswork had 1 job posting I ever reached out to. Most online postings circulate for years and autorenew though the position is filled.

If you’re only going to be there for 2 years, try getting a job in academia. I’d be suspicious of a PP group that is fine with you leaving after 2 years.

Yeah I agree with academics, they’re used to the revolving door dynamics already.
