Hi there,

I was wondering if someone could provide some direction for a psychiatry resident that would like to further their training to better manage pain. I would like to practice pain management in an outpatient clinic, but also be comprehensive/familiar in the various modes of pain interventions. However, it seems that ACGME pain medicine fellowships are mostly geared towards anesthesiology/PMR. Are there ACGME fellowships that might be more suitable for this or should ABPM be pursued instead? Your thoughts appreciated!

You likely have a very good chance. Far less competitive then previous years. Hot anesthesia market means fewer applicants going for fellowship. Most programs have become more open to taking non-anesthesia and non-PMR backgrounds.

The PD at Brigham and Women’s Hospital trained in psych and addiction medicine before doing pain medicine fellowship. Definitely possible. Best advice is it try to get a formal rotation in your institution’s pain clinic or do an away rotation if your institution doesn’t have an associated pain fellowship, start shadowing, get involved in research if possible, etc

our network had 2 psych residents who matched into pain fellowships last year. it's definitely possible.

psyc and pain sounds like a fun combo, plan on practicing both?
