My source is a direct email from Gary Becker. The implementation still has to happen (takes time). The vote was decided just yesterday.
Straight from DR is my understanding. No reason for MSK or IR fellowship before a pain fellowship.

Is this akin to the pain fellowship that PM&R and Anesthesia have? As in, will residents for all 3 specialties be vying for the same fellowship?
Pain Medicine is an official subspecialty of Anesthesia, Physiatry, Neuro, Psych, family, ER and radiology.

Many many addiction issues in pain management along with comorbid mood personality and adhd disorders
I guess if we are talking about non-interventional pain it makes sense.
