If you are planning on using this before you start rotations, I would wait until then to get it. New models come out all the time, which is why I am waiting till I start my rotations to get one.

The HP Ipaq H4100 (or current equivalent) is a fabulous machine.
It comes with both wifi and blue tooth access. With the fat battery it will run for a week of intermittant use without a recharge. I decked mine out with a
128 megabyte flashcard and use it to carry EVERYTHING. No, seriously, EVERYTHING.

This sucker carries well over a dozen microsoft reader titles, Merc Manual fulltext (mobic reader), Stedman's COMPLETE medical dictionary, LEXI drugs platinum international version whic has drug names from 26 countries, Lexi natural products, griffith's five minute consult, Skyscape's IDENT-A-DRUG, Koda-Kimble's Applied Therapeutics, Harriet Lane's Pediatric Handbook, Washington Manual of Therapeutics, Medical Wizards PharmD Toolkit, and there is still room for more.

When I was studying for the Washington law exam I scanned the entire lawbook with an OCR program into adobe PDF format and had that on there also to study.

This technology is incredible. A virtual wagon of references that fit into your shirt pocket. I gave my old machine (a Toshiba 355) to my daughter. She has a keyboard for it and uses it in lecture to take her notes with. I used that machine for two years and was very happy with it. It cannot hold a candle to the HP but it worked very well for me for two years and would last eight hours of continuous service on one charge.

Both of these machines are Microsoft pocket PC based. I have never owned a true Palm.

I'd suggest waiting until clinical rotations as well. Although it might be helpful for scheduling etc before then, you won't really fully utilize it until you get out into the hospital. I'm a med student and we all got the Dell Axim X3i a few months ago that will accompany us once our clinical stuff starts in July. It's a great machine that is wireless and can be used anywhere in my hospital.

We all use 5 minute clinical consult, Taber's Medical dictionary, and Archimedes (which is helpful for calculations such as A-a gradient and BMI). These programs can be expensive and it helps that my school "gave" them to us. You might want to check with your school about their policy on PDA's. I know where my dad teaches at Campbell that they provide a PDA before the 4th year and also a little bit of software for it too (some time of formulary).

Good luck!

I'd suggest waiting too. I was just about to buy an X3i a few weeks ago. I didn't, and when I went to check out dell.com today, I found that they have been replaced by a newer model (the X30).

That's the discontinued model. The replacement is the X30. 50% faster, 802b, bluetooth, etc, for 15 bucks more.

Too late now for the coupon but 349 - 199 doesn't equal $15 more.... The x3 i mentioned IS a discontinued model that's why it's $100 off of $299 ($100 off only on the x3 not x30) = $199. The x3 is a good pda if you're not a big time internet surfer on your pda. Plus you could still get the x3i way cheaper, but jdpharmd is correct on being discontinued, but they are not bad models. If you want the new one you'll have to wait 1 and half months before they ship it out and pay $150 more for wireless, Windows 2nd ed, and faster processor. BTW I have the x30 624mhz so I know the difference. I was just pointing out it was a good deal to those who wanted one.

Oops! I thought the X3i was 299 and the X30 was 314. Ok, it's $114 more. Glad I don't have my kinetics exam until tomorrow. 😉

Our school provides them (i'm sure if you contact the company you can get a group discount) and we were provided with palm M515 (which at the time was the best they had)
i recently replaced mine b/c we are required to have the full lexi suite (the school gets us an EXCELLENT deal on it)
i replaced it with a Palm T3 which i absolutely love, i almost went with the wireless but decided that i really didn't need it (and hated the built in keyboard)
i have some friends with the pocket pc OS. they seem to like it but it can be a little slow.

we have to use them in class as the instructors tend to ask questions that require us to look up the answers on lexi
other schools probably don't do that since they don't provide/require them.

Even though USC doesn't require a laptop, I'm thinking of getting one for myself. Any recommendations? And also any useful programs/softwares to have would be great... thanks!

I recommend HP. I bought mine for $899(refurbished), it come with all the essentials, and it has not failed me thus far.

I also have question on PDA, I am debating wether to get pocket PC or palm pilot. I need palm to back up my data such as word, excel, pdf, and emails. I really don't care about bells and whistles like mp3 players. I just need machine that never crashes. I was leaning towards pocket pc but I heard these things crashes often. Is this true?

If they're doing similar things, Palms and Pocket PCs crash with equal frequency. It used to be that Pocket PCs were much less stable, hence the reputation that Palms are more stable.
