Any resident out there have a Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification? Our CRNAs need to be PALS certified but we, residents only got ACLS certified...

Had it - let it lapse. It's a fairly interesting class though - I enjoyed it much more than any of the ACLS classes that I took or taught. Unless you're doing a lot of peds ER or trauma, I'm not sure how useful it is for anesthesia.

Got it during orientation for a categorical intern year and will need to renew for peds ICU service later on.

Wish I had ATLS though.

Never had it as a resident.

If you plan on doing any peds as an attending, you will have to get it. I would recommend getting it late in your ca2 year or as a ca3 so it is still valid when you start your hospital credentialing. I did the heartcode thing, which is basically a cd of code simulations you have to pass, and then i did a skills check that was super easy. Would definitely recommend the heartcode cd.

Had it as an intern -- peds prelim yr, and it unfortunately lapsed earlier this year. My program should have us get it as we do a lot of peds. I also had Neonatal resuscitation, which came in handy on an OB rotation once last year.

At my gen surg prelim hospital they're offering ATLS for free for us. It's up to me to take it or not (unlike the ABSITE). Is this something that I'll want to have for CA-1?

Washington state requires all nurses and physicians working in level 1 (only one in the state) and level 2 (there are many) trauma centers who work in the ER, OR or ICU to have taken PALS or ATLS. It doesn't have to be current. Only applies to staff, not residents. I have met staff who have taken one of the classes, but lost their old card, and ended up having to retake it.

I have no idea if other states have similar requirements. If you take PALS or ATLS and let it lapse, hang on to your card. I'm sure a few other states or hospitals may have similar requirements.
