In the psych section of FA, in the discussion of panic disorder it mentions a high incidence of attacks during Step 1. Sure, the test is gonna be stressful, but a high incidence of panic attacks? I wonder if that is true, or if the authors are just being tongue in cheek.

i wouldn't be surprised. I have never seen so much build up and talk about a test before. Its like the end all of our med school careers even though most of us have 2 years left.

Yah our school had a ridculously high failure rate in the class ahead of us last year, so this year they have been doing everything they can to "motivate us".

UNFORTUNATELY it's in typical 'knee jerk' reaction style and has stressed people to the point of panic attacks. They're doing things like putting letters in your box if you were in the bottom 1/3rd of a shelf exam telling you "there is a high probability you will fail based on past performance" (remember, ONE class did bad) and other such fear inducing techniques... I'll just be glad when it's over....

Yikes! :scared:

I think that's pretty funny, definitely tongue in cheek, or at least some exaggeration,
though by definition panic d/o's are "recurrent periods":scared:

Also check out pg 414 (2008), the example of Suppression, a "mature" Ego Defense is choosing not to think about USMLE until the week of 👍

btw, I wasn't saying this was funny

those kind of letters are fairly common throughout a lot schools; these days, schools just want to cover their @$$

Panic attacks decrease PCO2. Make sure you stick that concept in your head.:meanie:

I am not a doctor, just sharing my personal experience as I have had depressions and anxiety for sometime. The best way to get over anxiety and depression is to take a break from your regular schedule, go out, and take good sleep. This helps in clearing the mind and try consulting a specialist who can suggest you as how you can get over your problem. Rather than going on drugs, one should look for the reason behind there problem . Keeping your self busy and changing the schedule also helps sometimes to get over stress and depression.
