If your parents work for a medical school (state school) do you get cheap tution at that school? How do they determine how cheap?

Probably not. I've never heard of this, nor do I see how it would work.

i heard Albert Einstein has a discount for students of employees (maybe it was faculty...). not sure how much but it was substantial.

I know that's the policy for a lot of schools for undergrad, but I haven't heard of that at medical schools. I'd be suprised.

I believe there is some help. A member of our med school faculty has a child who is a student of that school. This person made a comment once that one of the perks of the position was their child's tuition. However, I can't imagine it's as significant as it is in undergraduate institutions.

I wonder that too at my institution. There are quite a few people in my class whose parents are part of the med school faculty although my school is pretty inexpensive for a med school as is. It seems like an odd phenomenon to me because if I were in that situation, I would try to go to another school. Aside from gaining new experiences outside of what you were exposed to through your parents, I think I would prefer to establish my professional identity without the direct influence of my parent.

Moving to Pre-allo.

Right, because clearly people who have never been to medical school would know the answer, and not the students who actually pay tuition currently.

This "moving to another forum" thing is getting out of hand. Yes, I know current med students read this forum too, but I don't see why this needed to be moved. It's entirely appropriate for the Allopathic forum.

Mods, why is this thread being moved to pre-allo? This is a legit question for med students.

rogerwilco,

Thanks for posting my thoughts. Seriously why would you move this thread? People become way to a-retentive with this stuff. If I post something in a certain forum, then that's where I would like it read. Really annoying.

Some schools do give tuition remission if your parent's contract is old enough.

my mom's been working at my state medical school for 25 years, and has won multiple awards for compassion, dedication, and service. i can't even get a g**-d*** secondary...

Apparently state schools are very impersonal. Sorry that happened. 🙁

A child? like a 12 year old in medical school?

*sarcasm* 😉

To OP,

I know Ohio State gives half off, and michigan gives some sort of discount

bump. Anyone have any more info? For a state school does it matter if the parent is a parttime faculty member?

You have to find that out from the Benefits Administration from whatever school you are in.

Pre-meds are clueless already. Why is this thread here again?

Does anyone know any specifics about this for state schools? What is the typical tuition reduction? Does the parent work full or parttime?

Thanks

Don't move this thread, I'm asking current students.

One of my friends is enjoying a free, full-ride by virtue of his MD dad who is a full-time professor at our school.

I go to a public school, and if your parents or spouse is faculty, you go for free. (I have classmates in both situations) It's a pretty sweet deal! Too bad my parents are blue-collar and are faculty of nothing 😛 Oh well, working hard to make them proud...

Thanks for the responses, what about part-time faculty?

MadameLULU is the only mod who has it out for this thread being in allo, even though it is very relevant to current medical students. So I will bump it to the top to see if any pre-allo have thoughts. Some people get a little power...

Perhaps you can explain why this question is so important to you. If the situation directly applies to you, you could easily contact your own school's office. If you just want to speculate, it's going to be a challenge to get information here as there really aren't a lot of people in this kind of situation. I'm sure it varies by school anyway.
