So I come home yesterday to find my mom standing in the kitchen busily highlighting a magazine. When I question this odd behavior, she says "Oh, we just got the annual listing of all of the doctors in Atlanta [from Atlanta magazine] and I was going through and seeing how many DO's there are." This publication has to be 50-60 pages long and she had seriously gone through and found every DO that has an affiliation with a hospital in Atlanta!! When I asked why she might have spent her valuable time doing this, she replied that she wanted me to know what hospitals in the area were especially DO-friendly. I love my mom! 😍

Anyone else have funny stories about their parents and med school?

Even with my score report right in front of her, my mom still thinks the MCAT is called the MEDCAPS. I love her though! 😀

lol,

my mom still says OD sometimes.

mom: "Oh honey, I'm sure you'll get in."

great thread....

When I was a full time worker in Orlando my mom would send me cut outs of the local paper and send them to me.

These were all "local" stories about medical schools and local medical school students. The real hometown stories. Heck I just found one the other day that she had sent me that I had on my wall in Orlando about Pikeville medical school and some of the first medical doctors from there. I finally got the hint and went back to school 🙂

Now a days I find it more amusing that my parents arn't into the whole...oh here is a DO and here is another. They kinda just realized that its initials after the name and are more excited to show me a newspaper clipping of a physician I shadowed. Oh look Rob...isn't this Dr. Soandso that you followed through his offices? My parents get way excited for that.

Also, lately my parents have been going on a binge of buying me stuff for my "move to medical school". I think they are totally enjoying getting me everything from a new dinnerware set to shower curtains. I'm letting them have at it. They are totally enjoying helping me set up and I'm reaping the benefits of getting free stuff. (They say I'm poor enough and need all the financial aid I can get!) Gawd...I think they are great!

My mom kept saying MedCAT until one day shortly before the test I snapped and yelled, "It's MCAT, Mom, MMMMMMMMCAT." 😳 I apologized.

Yep, my mom still refers to MCAT as the MEDCATS.....have not corrected her yet...might have to one of these days!

MedCATS isn't really wrong. MCAT stands for Medical College Admissions Test right? So MedCAT is just another way of abbreviating it.

My mom does the same thing

I've heard people people in the medical field say medcats as well...I just figured it to be some old school way reference. mcat...medcat...who cares...both will give you the same pain and anxiety

Heck, my mom is so out of it that she wouldn't even know what the "medcat" is.

As soon as I was accepted to NYCOM, my parents went to their provider manual and selected DOs as primary care physicians! Now they don't look at me funny when I talk about my day at school....I guess they just wanted to check out a practice and when they realized there was no difference......

They still felt rushed and overcharged! lol

Today I told my mom that I was thinking about taking the USMLE after the COMLEX next summer. "Oh, yes, honey--you should definitely take the USMLE, too--that way you'll be board certified, right?" Gotta love moms.

The doctor I shadowed called it the medcat, I'm glad I never corrected him.

This probably sounds terrible, but I just did the same thing. My three year old broke his foot last week, so I searched through our insurance provider directory to find a DO (our normal orthopedic is an MD, but no longer taking our insurance); I figured as long as I needed to switch doctors...why not? The really funny thing was that when I took my son to the ER, our Dr had been a DO (his daughter was shadowing him-kinda funny), but I had no idea until I was on my way out with the discharge papers. I ended up not getting to take my son to a DO cuz the only two within 25 miles were booked until Sept!!!

It is nice that you all have parents that care enough about you to do these things. Cherish them.

It is my birthday today I haven't gotten a phone call or a card or a gift from my parents. 🙁 You think I would be used to it by now at my age.

You all are quite lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Birthday Amy B.! My mom is the same way. I am a MSII, and my mom will still ask me what I am studying to become. I cannot get over how many times I've explained to her that I will be a doctor in 3 years, but she still doesn't get it.

Anyway... I didn't want this post to be about me. I just wanted you to know that you are not alone.

Have a fantastic birthday! 🙂

Cyndi

my parents understand that i'm practicing to be a regular physician or surgeon just as if i had gone to an MD school, but even though they know that, they just don't understand it enough to explain it to other people. they're always using words like "holisitic" and "alternative" etc, and i'm pretty sure most of my relatives and neighbors think i'm some sort of indian medicine woman. it used to drive me nuts, but now i have too many other things to worry about. like medical school. 🙄
