Hey guys,

At my school—I am a first year dental student-we take anatomy (gross, neuro, and dental), biochem (biochem, genetics and cell bio), physio and pathology in the first year. They comprise all but one of the components of the boards (part 1). Microbio is taught in the second year in a short condensed course.

Between year 1 and 2, I will have a complete summer break. Between year 2 and 3, there will be 2-3 weeks of break.

Is It a good idea to take the boards (part 1) in the summer between year 1 and 2? What are the pros and cons? Why is it that most students take them after year 2, a stressful year, when they could take it after year 1, when all the material is fresh and when all the summer is available?

Feedback from OMFS folks and those who have completed part 1 with a bang is especially appreciated. Please feel free to pm me if you wish.

Thank you

it's NBDE Part 1 (Step is for the med folks)

if your school will approve your application to take the exam....i see no reason why that would not be possible.

you pretty much get all of the info you need from dental decks and old exams.
i was in a similar situation....we were lacking only pathology before last summer...but we are taking part 1 in december. i feel like i have learned very little from our actual pathology class that will help on the boards......and it sure would be nice to have gotten the boards over with before the hell that is 2nd year.

i hope this helps, but it really comes down to whether or not your school will approve you to take the exam "early"

You cannot take step I without a medical school sponsoring your exam. So I guess you are talking about part I.👍

Yah-E on this board did pretty much exactly what you are asking (Part I after the year 1 summer, going into OMFS). He recorded all of the excruciating details on one of his "My journey" threads. I think it was called "My NBDE Part I Journey" or something like that. Run a search.

Yay,

But I think that it all depends on your program. Here at Arizona everyone takes part I after their 1st year. I loved it because my 2nd year was a lot less stressful. We had all of the necessary courses prior to our Summer break and so the timing was very natural. Best of luck.

Go ahead genius....It looks like you really don't need anyone's advice anyways if you are smart enough to take it after first year. Part I that is.

 ....i guess i hurt your feelings....sorry...:meanie: ...

notice how people either read the thread and not post anything or read it and post something meaningful. you posted here twice already and both of your posts have a mocking tone. if you have nothing nice or significant to say, then dont post. simple as that

fightingspirit i don't know what to tell you.. you sure have a bone to pick with people for no reason.. anyways yea take part 1 after first year if you can, b/c 2nd year is going to suck major ass and will probably make you not want to do anything after you done with 4 years.

thanks...i dont like to argue with people but as you can see, some people come to my threads just to post something that is not helpfull such as the person who posted just for the sake of sayin that i should say "part 1" as opposed to "step 1"...

anyways, thanks for the advice. i am not picking with you because you did not come to the thread to pick with me....

actually, i realized that pathology and operative classes go on till july in our school which will limit studying time. others have also said that it is going to be my last summer before i retire so i might as well enjoy it.....

once again, thanks for the feedback

I have the exact feelings you do about part I. Spent much time studying gross anatomy, metabolic pathways, etc. and felt like the summer break and long fall semester was time that lots of those details left me. If path would have been taught first year, we would have had all the classes needed for part I. When i was studying for part I in Dec of year two, I kept getting frustrated about how much I couldn't remember. I agree that retention of the information becomes more difficult, especially after that summer off. I wouldn't advocate taking part I before you have all the classes, but perhaps your school would consider curriculum changes? Probably not though, students seem to have little influence on things that directly affect them in D school. At least that's my experience.

this is true, especially when you consider the fact that the dents take most of their classes with the meds. a med-school is not gonna change its curriculum just because the dents want it....i hear ya....from a logical viewpoint, the benefits of taking part 1 after year one are very obvious....

in fact, even if patho continues well into july, i stilll think i should go for it by the end of august.

also from reading on SDN and talking to students at my school, it really seems that year 2 is hell. so how does one muster the energy and strength to take that test after it......

Oh the irony.

I would love to take the boards and get them over with. We don't take patho or micro until our second year and I doubt temple will allow us to take it after the first year. I would check with your school to see if they allow you to even take it after 1st year. I know my school won't allow it. They won't even allow us to take it the middle of our second year during christmas break.

(I hope that was a contribution...I don't want to get flamed😎 )

Take it after the second year. You will learn more material in classes like oral path and systems path. You will pick things up in these courses and potentially others (immunology unless that's a 1st year class) that will help you on the exam. You won't know they will be useful until you are actually taking the test. That's my opinion.

thanks.....actually, i recently learned that we are not allowed to take part 1 after year 1. so that summed it up for me. here at stony we take oral patho in the second semester of year 1 and it continues into july....

My school made me take it after first year, because of the exam format change and to be honest, it didnt do me any good. Why? because i bombed the dental anatomy part, a lot of the things I needed for that section, like pediatric questions, we only learn in second year. In addtion, a lot of people in my class had problems with that section. So I would be careful if I were you.

Also I would like to add to that, that walking into second year, a lot of people were burnt out as a result of taking boards. My grades in second year would have been better had I had a chance to rest this summer.

i am sorry that you feel that you did poorly on dental anatomy. are you sure you bombed? many people come out of that test thinking they bombed dental anatomy and yet they end up exceeding their expectations.i hope this is the case with you.

on the other hand, sure you get into year 2 burnt out but what about coming out of year 2 burnt out only to realize that you have to actually take the boards?....lol ...it's a loose loose situation ...lol

I already have my scores, dental anatomy was my lowest section by quite a lot.

Here's what happened. MOst ppl in my class took board the week before second year started. I just think its better to have a break, start second year. Yes you will be burnt out finishing second year. But you get that extra adrenaline for two-three weeks, and keep the fuel running. If you dont take a break before second year, you run out of gas after like two months, and everything starts to slip.

My opioion is this, for the best results/ best mental state. I think it is better to take boards after second year. I just think that you need a summer to recouperate, you will be fresh going into second year, kick ass, and yeah you will be tired when you finish. But like I said, the adrenaline and pressure will kick in for you to get thru boards.
