Part C Psychiatry

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Part C of the board exam is the clinical part. 250 questions, after watching a video, reading a vignette or listening to an audio clip.

The problem is, this part is new and the review courses are still learning about it. I found this part to the hardest, and also scored the lowest on. At the time, I thought I had gotten most of the questions wrong.

Did you do Beat the Boards? Their videos are fairly good. But knowing their notes cold will help the most on the clinical part also. The content questions are doable on part C. But the problem with this section is that you have to think in a broad sense. They will present some vague vignette, and ask you to select all possible diagnosis. And if you miss one, you get the question wrong. I would recommend multiple reviews of the BTB notes for this section.

When looking at the video example the ABPN has on their website, I tried to think of other possible scenarios, the types of questions they asked and how it was all worded.

Newfangled kids. Back in my day ... Get off my lawn!

(No, seriously I had no clue what Part C was either. Thanks for telling us. 🙂. )

How to prepare. Failed by narrow margin.

I probably won't get my score report for a little while longer (I live in Japan), but I imagine I scored low in this section. I really thought it was a crap shoot and very ambiguous. I've been trying to think of advice to give others who will be taking this test next year and I can't. I guess knowing the mental status exam cold and maybe having discussions about observations with real patients?

I really can't think of much else. I guess making sure you are aware that the question stem increases in size from patient to patient (I did not notice this sometimes). I've been told if ever in doubt, "safety first," but that was from people who took the old boards.

Sorry, but that's all I got. Good luck!

I thought Part C was ridiculous at times. Pick the best answer ok no problem... now pick the second best answer... well uhm let me split some hairs... now pick the third best answer... Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.

So sorry to hear about your score on part C. I found that part of the test ridiculous and to hear that someone failed the test based on part C really irks me.
I would recommend taking a look at the sample video and questions on the ABPN website. Other than that I think this part of the test comes down to some clinical psychiatry knowledge (diagnosis and treatment) and a lot of luck.
Best of luck to you going forward.
