I'm a 4th year, getting ready to take the CSPE pretty soon out in Philadelphia, and was wondering if anyone has any up to date information on the exam or ways they have been instructed to prepare? From talking to other students at my rotations, it seems like each school has differed somewhat in their approach and what they've told students about the exam. I feel decently prepared to take a clinical board exam, but I think there still is a lot of ambiguity out there for everyone, considering we are the guinea pig class for this thing.

Results this week, per APMLE website (1-14-15)

In line with internal expectations during development, the overall national pass rate was 95%.

It's up to schools to release their individual pass rates.

People failed it?!?! Everyone made stupid mistakes but actually failing it, wow. At least there is a second chance for them. Hopfully everyone learned from the mistakes and can get past that pointless hurdle.

If you can't pass this test the first time you should not be able to practice medicine in any capacity, not even as a podiatrist.

Thats a harsh statement, maybe the students had performance anxiety. We do not know what happened.

This is the real world where some people just aren't qualified to do certain jobs. Can't pass an exam with fake patients? Nobody should have to find out what happens when OR lights come on.

They took our jobs!!!

Any insight on what made people fail this exam?

A bit after the fact, but yeah, definitely glad to see the high national pass rate for that exam. Des Moines University was 100%.

Word on the street is they are thinking of scrapping the exam. Any truth to this rumor? If so its good to see that the class of 2015 got royally screwed by having to shell out $1300 + travel expenses...

That's the joyful rumor we all hope will come true. The other word is that NBPME is in negotiations with NBOME to take it over after a dispute with NBME - per an email from our Dean.

Just what 4th year needs - more uncertainty and more money pouring out of our pockets.

As a member of the class of 2015. Thanks for the kind words

This is crap. This may be a rumor but I have heard similar talk from faculty at our school. What about the 2015's who were kept out of the match for failing the exam. They are yet to pass it, so would they even be eligible to apply for residency next year if there is no retest? These guys got shafted if they do cancel the exam. If they graduated in 2014 or 2016 they would have moved on into residency, but because they were part of 2015 (lets not forget the "vision of 2015") they got hosed.

Heard rumblings the test would be moved to early February 2016 with results a week before match. Not sure if this is true....just rumblings.

so unnoficial, but heard the exam is cancelled for class of 2016 and wont be taken until atleast august 2016. so it is SKIPPING a year.......... talk about some crap... if this doesn't fuel a lawsuit i dont know what will

Company who was running the clinical encounter test backed out last minute and they are trying to get a new company to run the clinical encounter. It will still go down.

Actually no it won't. They already released a statement saying the class of 2016 will not have to take it. They better have some sympathy for the class of 2015 while grading our part III boards, seeing as how we had to pay $1200 extra for the CPSE.

Interesting. I just talked to someone 2ish weeks ago who is on the council and this person told me it will happen this year.

No inside info here, but as has been mentioned, the APMLE website seems pretty specific in saying the class of 2016 won't take the Clinical Skills exam. I agree it seems like the class of 2015 is getting the short end of the stick.

I haven't heard anything from my school/Dean - will be interesting if they have any additional insight/information.

I'd love to hear more from Patch about the 4 people. Not so much about their fate, but if 2 administrations of the exam really did bring the pass-rate to "everybody but 4". AACPM is probably out of date, but they indicate 2015 had 584 people. Seems like a ton of money and misery for "parity".

CSPE Announcement

The NBPME has decided that the interests of all parties concerned are best served by suspending administration of the Clinical Skills Patient Encounter (CSPE) examination until August 2016 for students scheduled to graduate in 2017. It will not be a component of Part II for candidates in the Class of 2016.

The CSPE was initiated in August 2014 after a multi-year design and pilot testing effort. Unfortunately, the board could not reach an agreement with the testing vendor that would provide acceptable terms regarding cost and candidate service for future administrations. The NBPME received a proposal for continuing services in late January, and negotiations for suitable terms were unsuccessful. The board authorized seeking an alternate vendor, and approved a proposal from the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners, NBOME, at its March 21 meeting. Because of the complexity of the test program, it is not feasible to administer CSPE for the next cohort of Part II candidates in a reasonable timeframe.

The NBOME has a record of successful patient encounter testing that was begun in 2004 after many years of careful planning. Jon Haber, President of NBPME, said, “We are impressed by the capabilities and interest of NBOME to provide this service, and were pleased by the cost and commitment to excellent candidate service they described in their proposal.” The NBOME has an impressive testing center in Philadelphia, and is planning and constructing a second center in Chicago that will be available to the NBPME candidates. The test will be resumed in August 2016.

Embarrassing...

And 2017 is getting screwed. At least we aren't 2015...
