I searched SDN and couldn't find a thread on this. Do any of you plan on working during optometry school or are you taking our loans to cover living expenses such as food and necessities as well?

During the financial session on the day of interviewing, I asked what was the typical number of hours a student works (thru work-study), and I got various answers at different schools. For example, a rep from SUNY said around 15 hrs while at PCO I was told 1-5 hours. Of course it depends on the curriculum of the school and how much a student can handle. It sounds like students won't have much time to work, so I'm planning on taking out loans to cover a majority of my expenses. Any amount of work will help financially, but there is no way I'd be able to work enough to cover living expenses while in optometry school.

I have a few classmates who work part time but when I say part-time I mean a few hours one or two days a week, not something that's 20 hours or anything like that. I guess if you really want to you could work that much but I don't recommend it, optometry school takes up a lot of time and if you spend what little free time you have working you're going to get burned out pretty quick. There are always work-study jobs available at school which makes it a lot easier. You could work in the library or somewhere like that and study while you're there.

They told you that? All the work study people I know work maybe max 5 hours a week.
