I am a Canadian applicant hoping to get into dental school for Fall 2017. I am currently in a master of biomedical science program (MBS) that usually takes 3 semesters to complete (Fall: 3 courses, Winter: 3 courses, Summer: research project). However, there is an option of doing it part-time. I have completed the fall semester doing 3 courses (don't know my grades yet). But I'm just really burnt out and sick of school atm, and also going through some mental health problems. I've talked to my advisors and they have allowed me to drop classes for the winter semester. So basically, I would be taking one course in the Winter (also do research), research course in the summer, and would be completing the other 2 remaining courses in the fall.

Do dental schools frown upon students who do a 1-year masters part time? I did my undergrad degree as a full-time student (my stats are below).

I just really need a break from school right now. I wish I had taken a year off and hadn't started this masters program- but I'm aware that I should finish it.

Any advice would be appreciated 🙂.

STATS:
Undergrad (BSc): 3.87
Canadian DAT: 22AA (19RC; 22BIO; 25CHEM), 20PAT

If it's really encroaching onto your mental limits, I would take a break. Your health is more important than anything else.

Why would you need a masters if you did that well in undergrad? I'm a bit confused. Is Canada really that ridiculous?

I did it out of interest and because at the time I didn't want to just take a year off. But I'm just so tired of school now and am realizing I really needed a break after undergrad. I applied to 2 Canadian schools this year (for Fall 2016 entry). I haven't heard back from them yet, but even if I did I know that I wouldnt be able to start dental school straight out of this masters (if I did it full-time) with no break. Im just not mentally prepared right now. So that's why Im going to reapply to both Canadian and American schools for Fall 2017.

Thanks for the advice sumin5924. This is exactly why I'm considering part-time.
