Hey, does anyone know about family practice programs that offer shared/part time residencies that are already in place? Many programs say that they offer them, but don't seem to have people actually pursuing them. Anybody have any experience with this or have details on specific programs? Thanks!

I've never heard of a "part-time residency." Since Medicare funding for family medicine only covers training for three years, cost-justifying a part-time residency that took longer would be challenging.

Eastern Maine Med in Bangor, Maine had part-time residents at least until a year ago.

Maine-Dartmouth FP in Augusta, Maine has at least one part time 2nd year right now.

I haven't checked this out beyond looking at the site. www.sharedresidency.org

I read about the link in AMSA's magazine. It seems at least you can get a list of programs that are open to the option of shared residency.

So how long would it take someone to complete FP as a part-time resident? About 4.5 yrs? It may not be so bad for ppl raising kids, taking care of someone, or just wishing to have some life, and to earn some living.

Georgetown in DC currently has 2 half-time residents. I think it's taking them 4.5 years to finish.

Rochester, NY program says they are open to it and are willing to act as a clearing house to pair residents to share a position.
