Hi guys,

For various personal and family reasons, I am considering working as a part-time physician once I graduate from medical school.

I enjoyed my psychiatry rotation during third year a great deal, and have occasionally heard it mentioned that psychiatry is a specialty that accommodates part-time work. However, I am not familiar with any specific details of how this might be the case.

So, does psychiatry accommodate part-time practice well? What does the typical part-time practice look like? Finally, what subspecialties are most amenable to part-time practice?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

It is fairly easy to work part-time at a community mental health center. Part time work is also often available at state mental hospitals, though it helps if you can work most days of the week- four 5 to 6 hour days per week is doable at many state hospitals

more and more primary care practices are looking for a psychiatrist consultant to help the physicians work with the patients rather than directly interact with patients. I could see that being doable as well.

I have a family member in private practice who only works half days, after she drops off her kids off at school she goes to work for a few hours and is done with the day in time to grab the kids and spend the afternoon with them. She loves her practice and the only problem she has is having to turn down patients as she filled her practice within months. She hired a woman to schedule appointments and do insurance stuff a few days a week, but overall her overhead is low and she's making around 100k. Perfect job for parents, imo.

Sorry to bump my own thread, but I was wondering if anyone else has any input. Specifically, I am wondering what fellowships are good for part-time work?

I am interested in Forensics; how conducive is it to only working 2 or 3 days a week?

Thanks again!!

Subspecialty or not, you can work as little or as much as you want, as you see fit, and as fits your wallet.
