Hey guys, I have heard mention of dental students being able to work as hygieninsts after second year. That sounds pretty awesome as hygienists around here are making ~$40/hr!!!! I currently have a part time job but it would be nice if I could move up to something that pays a little better in a year or so. Anybody know anything about this?

I've heard whisperings of this, too. I imagine the requirements probably vary from state to state, but you'd almost certainly have to pass a licensing exam in order to practice hygiene. It's definitely something I'd love to do during my clinical years, if the opportunity presents itself. 😀

Ive heard the same, although I know we can start doing cleanings at the end of our first year (the 3rd year I just got my cleaning fro msaid he was gonna be my first patient at the end of the year!), but I dont think we are allowed to go get jobs for it yet.

In the state of Massachusettes, third year dental student can sit in on the hygiene liscensure exam and begin working as dental hygienists on nights and weekends. I'm not sure how other states work though.

If I remember correctly from my Tufts interview they mentioned that Mass was the only state that allows this, or one of very very few.
