So my mom has a partial that she doesn't wear because she says it doesn't fit and it hurts. Recently she had two more teeth extracted leaving her with 4 on the top. She does not want to get teeth added to the partial because she won't wear it anyway. Since losing these last two teeth she is really unhappy with the way she looks. I haven't seen her yet, but she sounds really depressed over the phone. The problem is she can't afford to buy a new partial and Medicaid will only pay for one every 10 years or something. She asked her dentist if he would just extract the remaining 4 teeth so that she could get a plate (we think Medicaid would pay for it). He would not do it though because I guess the remaining 4 teeth don't need to be extracted yet.

So is there anything she can do? If this dentist will not extract the other 4 teeth at this time, do you think there is a chance any other dentist would do it? Is there a better idea (assuming we just do not have $1500 to buy a new partial)? The dentist tells her that the partial she has can not be "fixed."

Call other dentists and explain your situation with them. I am sure that you will find one that will be willing to work with your mother to get the best possible treatment that takes your mother's wants into consideration but also has her best health interests in mind as well.

You can go to a dental school to get dental care. The cost will be a great deal less. E.G. At UCLA a partial denture costs $500.
