This is for a friend of mine, who wanted to know if theres something called as a partime residency. Can anyone provide me with some info. Thanks

You can do this, but it's something that has to be negotiated with your program. It will really help if the programs really really wants you.

I think its a bit far fetched too, anyway thanks Ed 🙂

Just went to Freida...Choose the specialties of ER, Fam, IM & Peds. Click "optional criteria", and select "offer part-time/shared positions". Click "search" and you will get a list of 146 programs.

Hope this helps.

If you take a look at various residency listings for some specialities, you'll notice that some residencies explicitly mention "part time", and sometimes even how many people are currently working "part time" - on the other hand, I'm not sure if this refers indeed to residents or attendings who are working part time.

it definitely exists. i even know for a fact of 2 programs that don't even 'advertise' part-time potential on FREDIA, yet have 4 residents (= 2 positions) that are part-time. 👍

for the record, if you add all the part-time hours adn compare it to the full-time hours over the course of 3 years, the part timers actually end up doing 3.5 years. just an FYI.

good luck - i know it's DEFINITELY possible. no doubt 😉

One of the graduates from my school did it. She entered the regular match and just told them that she wanted to do (peds i think) in 4 years instead of 3 to allow her to take of more time. They were cool with it. Two caveats, this woman was "all that" good research, AOA yada yada. Further this was a West Coast touchy feely program.
