is pass/fail really pass/fail or do competitive residency programs ask schools for students' class rank (or test scores, etc)?

While I feel that students should strive to master material and aim for top grades, it seems unfair that residency programs could evaluate us based on a number most people don't know would be disclosed.

Hi Medicine2010,
Do not be offended by this grandiloquent popinjay; he is but a lonely, feckless troll from the pathology forum, who despite his annoying, mindless drivel, does provide entertainment for the "real" pathology residents as a target for occasional bouts of sarcastic merriment. He has an opinion on everything, yet knowledge of nothing. Crawl back beneath the bridge dermpathloSer.

thanks newbie. anyone know if rank is ever taken into consideration at P/F med schools?

My med school is technically pass/fail, but they do keep track of class rank which is used to determine AOA and is reported to residencies as far as I know. Don't know if this is true for most others or not.

how can you find out whether your school does this? I do think it's unfair scores are used without people realizing, and especially unfair because some people do find out that the scores matter from some inside scoop or whatever - seems like everyone should get a equal amount of information about how they'll be ranked against their classmates.

Anyway, will your dean or whoever give you a straight answer about this? Or is it bad form to ask?

This was also posted on the Allo forum. More replys there:

You may also want to find out what format your school uses for the "Dean's Letter" (MSPE). Here is what AAMC recommends - see the appendices at the bottom of the document.

Now, it may differ for other specialties, but as I recall, every candidate application I reviewed for general surgery had an MSPE with class ranking or at the very least, a graph which shows your performance relative to others in your class, included.
