hi,

how does pass/fail grading affect chances at residency programs? i'm not sure how students from these schools are compared to students who have actual grades

I would say that school name would probably have some weight on your application as well?

School name has almost no impact on residency applicant selection. This can be seen in the two surveys of orthodontics and endodontics below. The two most important factors to program directors were interview ratings and dental school class rank.

I'd vote for class rank trumping all.
In the near future, ADAT will probably become a factor as well.
Then meaningful letters of Recommendation.
If all of the above check out, then you land the interview, where you get the chance to "wow 'em".

so you wouldn't think there's a disadvantage to either when looking at residencies?

Well no not in general since Columbia + a few other P/F schools have much better match rate %'s than many rank schools.
