Hey guys. I never selected the pass/fail option for any of my classes. However, some of my classes were satisfactory/unsatisfactory courses, like internship or research. So when i put it down on the AMCAS app, i checked the Pass/Fail box. It only occurred to me when i saw the completed application with 19 credits of "Pass" that the adcoms might just quickly scan the transcript and notice that i took a hell of a lot of courses pass/fail. Do you think this is the case? Was I supposed to check the pass/fail box, or is that only for normal grade courses that were taken as Pass/Fail? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

AMCAS people will correct it if it's wrong, it's not a big deal.

Does your school do a committee letter? Might have them make mention of this so it can be explained beforehand.

Well, I already submitted the AMCAS and they sent it back with these 19 credits of "pass". They changed my Satisfactory "S" grade to a "P" grade. I just want to know, how do other people go about representing satisfactory-unsatisfactory courses on their amcas?

I took classes that were graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, and I marked them down as Pass/Fail but for the grade I put "S", since that's what was going to show up on my transcript. I suppose they might go back and change all of mine to "P" as well, but it has not been verified yet. They really shouldn't penalize people for taking classes P/F...I had no choice with mine because that is the only way they were offered. I think they will check to see which classes you took pass/fail, and as long as they are not bio/chem/physics courses it should be alright.

You did the right thing by checking the P/F boxes; if the course was taken S/U, you should check the P/F box, even if there was not a grading option. I don't think it is possible to have "too many" P/F courses--I guarantee you that you didn't take as many courses pass/fail as I did; my entire undergraduate transcript is pass/fail, as are many of my MS and PhD courses. 😛 I checked pass/fail for every S/U class, and then typed "S" for the grades. AMCAS verified me a month ago with no problem. I have spoken to the admissions office at every school to which I am applying, and they were all willing to consider my application in spite of my having no GPA, credit hours, or grades at my major undergraduate institution. Most schools did say, however, that they would expect an excellent MCAT score from me because of my lack of grades in all of the pre-requisite courses. I would imagine that I might get asked about my unusual college background at interviews, but so far it has not stopped me from getting one secondary from a school that screens (USF).

I think the worst that can happen is they make the correction for you if it's wrong.. On the phone they told me to enter classes EXACTLY as they appeared on my transcript. They still changed my Credit/No Credit class grades to a "P" (it said "CR" on my transcript) and put a big X next to it in the margin.. I'm sure you're fine..

I took a class S/U as a freshman and got a U. However, I passed the course and got credit that counted towards my major and towards graduation (U can be either a D-credit or F-no credit). But AMCAS put my U (pass) as a FAIL. This naturally looks bad. I would have retaken the class if my undergrad had said I failed the course, but I did not fail the course.

Anyone in a similar situation? Should I contact AMCAS or the individual schools?

Thanks.

You can have a P/F listed on AMCAS? I'm just at the premed postbac level, but when I spoke with a premed advisor at my undergrad school last week (u of michigan), the advisor said that I MUST have my one P/F intensive french class passing grade "uncovered" for my applications to med school. She said that you can't submit your AMCAS with a P/F grade anywhere in your transcript.

I'm guessing she was wrong. Regardless, I paid them to uncover my grade (NO idea what it was), and have re-requested my transcript. Maybe it's just a univ of michigan med school requirement (not that I'm planning to apply there - I'm not).

You can have a grade uncovered?? crap. I totally would have done that if I knew it was an option!
