Pass Fail System?

NEOCOMP uses a pass/fail grading system?? An intern at my hospital just told me about this the other day. I think it is kinda interesting... what would be the advantage of doing such a system?? (70%= pass).

I would think it would be counterproductive, because as much as i want to learn stuff, i know i would take the lazy way out. I would be concerned because they are not accredited yet and i would think they would want to promote maximum studying to make the best grade possible.

While my school does not follow a pass/fail system, I have heard of schools that do have this system, and the student must receive 90% to pass. No lazy way out of that one!!

I don't know if any pharm schools do it this way, but the med school here does pass/fail/honors. I think a 93% and above is honors.

I'm not sure the reasoning behind P/F classes. Maybe to prevent so much competition. Or maybe make people more motivated to learn rather than just memorize and get a good grade.

Yea he said 70% is pass, but they have Honors which is 1.5 standard deviations above the average

USN is p/f and they are accredited. It is to everyone's advantage to work together. There is very little cut throat competition. Most of us are willing to help each other and work together. It makes it much more doable to have the help.

USN grad here. The pass/fail system has it good and bad sides. What really tweeked me off was when i would technically get an 80% and still fail the test since passing was 90%. I do agree that it promotted more teamwork to a point.

Is there really that much competition once you are in phramacy school? I don't feel like i need to compete at all...if anyone needs help and ask me i will (gladly) help them.

After spending one year at UF as an undergrad - I was so completely put off by the competition that I did not apply to their pharmacy program.

After the backstabbing I had seen in my Organic and Microbio classes - I couldn't imagine having to complete 4 more years with those same students.

I attend Pacific U - which is modeled after USN's pass or fail system. The bar is set at 90%, which is difficult but do-able. There is ZERO competition to get ahead of classmates. Instead, it fosters the "Let's get there together" mentality.

It's not for everyone - but I think it is a step in the right direction...
