your peds shelf score will have very little to do with anything. a pass doesnt keep you out of chop. an honors wont get you into boston children.

many factors will help you, some more than others. grades and class rank are important. letters of recommendation are important. research can help you but wont hurt you if you dont have it. aoa will really help you but the vast majority of the applicants will not have that distinction so not having it wont hurt you. extracurriculars are important as well. the more good things you have, the better off you will be, but there isnt a single thing that will make or break your application. if you really want to go to a certain program, try and do an away rotation there and try to rock it.

I agree with scholes. I would just say that you shouldn't go by just the name when you look at residency programs. CHOP/Boston etc are good names but they still might not be a good fit for you. I interviewed at those programs but found the environment was not a good fit for me. You do NOT have to go to the US News # 1 residency to get an outstanding fellowship or post-residency job (especially in pediatrics). Good Luck.
