Not sure if this is posted somewhere else. I was wondering if someone failed Step 1 but passed COMLEX, do they have to report the USMLE scores or can they just report the COMLEX scores? I thought I overheard that students who are taking the tests this year have to report it no matter what the outcome. But I heard that if you took the tests in past years, you didnt have to report the scores if you failed. Anyone know the truth? Thanks.

This year, if you apply to ACGME programs you must include your USMLE scores:

Note to osteopathic applicants only: Before you certify your ERAS application, consider whether you will apply to ACGME- and/or AOA-accredited programs. If you plan to apply to ACGME-accredited programs and you have taken the USMLE, you must report that on your CAF. If you only plan to apply to AOA accredited programs, you do not have to report the USMLE on your CAF.

No idea if they plan a change for next year, but I doubt it.

and on that same vein, if you apply to AOA programs and osteopathic match only, you do not have to release your failed USMLE score.

Where did you find this? I was looking but couldnt find anything.

So this means that current MSIII's who took Step 1 in 2009 will need to include the scores if you apply to a ACGME program? Or does it mean current MSII's who are taking Step 1 in 2010 will need to include scores if they apply to a ACGME program?

Shy, do you know if you can just use COMLEX scores if you want to and pretend like you never took the USMLE if you apply to AOA programs? How about ACGME programs too? Sorry, I am still confused and the GI system isnt helping me get any less confused. Thanks.

Redwings, here's the deal.

If you apply to ACGME and have taken the USMLE, you MUST RELEASE THAT SCORE. I understand you do NOT have to release your COMLEX score.

If you apply to only AOA and have taken the USMLE, you do NOT have to report that score. You MUST release your COMLEX score.

These rules were true for my match (this year), and are not likely to change. So basically, if you don't want anyone to know you failed USMLE step 1, you can NOT apply to ACGME programs. Now, on the other hand, if the programs are dually accredited, you can apply in the AOA match on the DO side and avoid reporting your USMLE score. If, however, you apply in the ACGME match to a dually accredited program you MUST RELEASE your USMLE score.

This is clearly spelled out in the application manual in ERAS. But you do have to read the whole thing. You know I wouldn't steer you wrong, Red. Hope you got the rotation site you wanted. 🙂
