Hi fellow SDN pre optometry,

I know you guys must be tired of seeing the same post over and over again about gpa and accepted chances into optometry school but I'm just at a lost on what to do. Basically I'm looking to see if someone was in my same shoes and was able to turn their outcome into something positive. So here's a little about my background. I graduated with a biology degree and graduating gpa was low a 2.75 on 4.0 scale due to certain circumstances. Once graduating I have retaken all the important prequisite courses and managed to do very well like getting A's and B's but it has only raised my science gpa (3.2) but not my graduating gpa. Now onto my OAT throughout my undergraduate degree I took the test three times which I didn't score too well because I'm a horrible test taker(TS 240,250,260). So now I'm coming up to my fourth time taking it next week I've had a longer time studying switched from using Kaplan to OAT destroyer and Chas videos. So I hope I can get a good score. Now my background in optometry. I have been working in the field for eight years from being a apprentice optician and a certified ophthalmic assistant. I know how to do a full range of test that I have learned from fellow doctors I worked with. Now I just need to be better with diagnosing patients. I also am a professor at community college teaching refraction and optics to future ophthalmic technicians. I have applied to this cycle 2017 and finished all my applications and just waiting to add my latest OAT score I get next week. So my reasoning for this post is if I don't score very high what can I do to seem more competitive to these schools since I have low gpa and OAT scores or there isn't any chance of me getting aceppted to a optometry programs and quit pursuing this dream of becoming an optometrist. I hope I hear from the SDN community to help me out. Thanks

A strong OAT score can overcome a lower GPA. A low OAT is probably not going to be overcome by a high GPA.

But both a low OAT and a low GPA is just not going to cut it, no matter how much experience or "passion" you have. You're going to need to kick some ass on the OAT.

You need to focus on your OAT scores and figure out how to bring them up. With your gpa you need to score well above 300 in all sections to be considered for an interview.
Your passion and experience are great but most schools have an academic qualifying round based on GPA and OAT.
Have you reached out to an admissions counselor from your school of choice? They would be your best resource to help you.
