I was wondering if anybody has found any unique ways to bring in some passive income as a dental student. Is it possible? Every little bit helps. My wife will work while I'm in dental school, but she will likely be earning less than I am now (which still isn't very much to begin with). So we are worried about that.

I found a way a few weeks ago, but it isnt something everyone is comfortable with...donating your gametes... cryobank offers up to $1200/month at $100/session...

Wow that's some good money for what you're providing 😀

lol.... Everybody loves a weed growing, sperm donating dental student!

u could look at some scholarships. ADA has some - not amounting to much, maybe 1-2k, but hey, anything helps right?

And to think...we've been giving it away all this time for free!!!!

Tutor some undergrads if you have the market for it. A family friend had a classmate in med school who used to tutor gen chem, paid for his med school. some pre meds/dents have mommys and daddys with big pockets.

Dental schools cost $80 dollars an hour to attend once you figure in living expenses (on the low side). Medical schools are still cheaper, not by too much, however... So this student tutored hour for hour assuming he/she had a generous paid tutor position?

I don't know if this counts or not but...
I knew two gals that spent their whole senior year house-setting for a professor that was away on sabbatical. He paid them a small fee and they lived in a first class house for free. In return they maintained the house, paid some bills, collected the mail, took care of the dog, etc.

Tutoring can go up to 150 an hour; couple that with scholarships and in-state tuition and maybe it could happen?

Regardless, tutoring is not passive income in any sense of the phrase, but still a pretty decent option for good students to make beer money, or more if you have the stones to ask for more and the skills to deliver.

The school where he tutored had very large general chemistry lectures (500+). So he would do supplementary lectures a few nights a week and offer exam reviews, for 100+ students and charge what ever he felt. A rare case but it can be done, if you have the market for it.

You could:

1) Own rental properties and pay a property manager to do all the maintenance, etc.

2) Invest in stocks that pay generous dividends.

3) Invest in precious metals (I know this does not generate passive income but it will be a store of value for when you graduate).

Choice #3 is my personal method. Silver is an unbelievable buy right now. Spot price has increased more than 50% ytd and still has a long way to go.

You can also sell your plasma. At least you don't have to worry about random kids showing up on your doorstep 18 years from now 🙄

YouTube videos a profitable sideline for Temple student

+1 for youtube... Pays half my food bills every month! Don't even have to constantly make new videos either, as long as the old ones keep getting hits.

I also developed another webpage that has advertisers pay me based on number of hits.

Gotta love the interwebs!

Groupon had starter classes for Pole dancing.

im a tutor and honestly the most you can charge per student per private session is about 50$/hr. gotta realize most students are broke and arent going to pay more than that. its better to set a price that has students come back to you every week. review sessions are different depending on how many students you get. you can give a group discount, but still manage to make $100+/hr. After i get into dental school i plan to work as a tutor on saturday mornings at a local college. it may be only 5 hrs/week, but you basically get paid to study your own stuff cuz there arent that many students coming for tutoring that early in the morning. factor in the occasional private tutoring session then thats about $100 passive income/week. To some that may not be a lot, but others its beer/groceries/gas money for little effort.

Hope you sold before the bubble exploded!

How does one make money from youtube?
Which stocks pay generous dividends?

If you want a high dividend go with a REIT...they're relatively cheap with returns in the range of 8-10%...but also if you're a student i'm guessing you're young enough to take some risk and go for more high growth stocks.

as for youtube you need hits which means being interesting and funny. easier said than done.

I know of a couple of people who paid their way through grad school playing poker as well...but if you can do that why go to grad school in the first place? 🙂

does anyone know of students blogging and making passive income?

1. acquire property
2. live in property & find roommates to pay rent
3. sell property when finished school
4. lots of money saved!

only problem is that you would probably need a great deal of money for step 1 😳

Find a couple of roommates so they can help you pay for part of the rent (and utility bills). I’d rather lose some of the convenience of having my own place than wasting my time on a part time job. I shared a 2 bedroom apartment with 4 of my classmates. I didn’t have to get a job. I had time to sleep, to do research, to study and to do well on the board exam. And that’s how I could afford to get a BMW 740IL right after I finished my ortho residency.

Just study and try to make it through school. Working like a slave is what you do BEFORE you get into school unless youre like most dental students and you have a silver spoon crammed up your *****. Passing school for 4 years is what you do instead of being stupid and worrying about chump-change.

p.s. Uncle Sam gives you PLENTY enough money to not have to work. Unless you have some kind of drug habit. What a dumb thread!

I don't know if other dental schools do it but here at IUSD, all of our lectures are podcasted (even though attendance is mandatory) and we pay someone to transcribe every single word from lecture onto the corresponding power point slide. We call them 'verbatims.' I do 9/10s of the lectures for our class and my wife does some as well on top of her full time job. So far, I have made about $1,500 this semester and she made about $300. We pay dental students $00.50 a minute but, because I do the majority of them, I get paid $00.75/min. The current D2s and all other classes above us get paid $1.00 a minute but we lowered that because it was wwaaaayyy to high. It's super awesome bc I get paid to study, basically. At IUSD, verbatims are the preferred way to study bc that way you dont have to pay attention in lecture, or in case you missed something.

Or, you can set up a popular blog (like this one: http://dentaldaddiary.blogspot.com/ [shameless plug and self promotion?]) and hope people click the google ad links on the side bar and margins. that has made me about $50 since I set it up a month or so ago.

Lastly, as a D3 and D4 you can do a couple of different in house jobs. There is paid Anatomy lab TA's, paid PBL facilitators, and paid bench instructors for the first and second years down in the bench lab (where we do all our simulator work and work on the dentoforms, etc). Those go for about $15.00/hour.

There are a few people in my class that bar tend on the weekend or work in a store in the mall. It all comes down to time management and how focused on being a gunner you are.

I recommend living off the LEAST amount of loan money as you can. It all adds up. The less you take out now, the sooner you can get that car, or go on vacation, or buy something nice for the wifey. All without having to worry about stupid loan repayment.

I dont have a drug habit, and I make cash money on the side. Its possible, brah. What a dumb comment to make on a legit thread.

Informative thread, I think the transcription Idea is great as well as the investing in silver. Anyone have anymore ideas?

What about working as a DA on saturdays? Most of the dental offices have hours on Saturdays. One pro I can see is that you can observe the professional dentist in action, ask questions, and make connection. Is there any restriction for D school students working as a DA?

Find a niche job.

In college I was a corner worker at a race track. I sat there and studied with some music on in the background and my radio on and when stuff when badly i did my job. Paid pretty nicely. Only had to bust out my fire extinguisher twice.

I also reffed soccer games on Saturdays. Anywhere from 100-200 for a few hours out at the field running behind kids and dealing with overzealous parents and coaches.

Even if it was just spending money... it was spending money that didn't come from my loan tab.

A lot of people don't seem to understand the difference between active and passive income.

I see your point. However, significant passive income only comes when you have huge amount to invest and you can sit on the return. For everything else, there has to be some kind of active involvement necesito.

Invest in emerging maple syrup conglomerates as an Angle Donor and reap what they sow. Oh, participate in high stakes, offshore, bear fights. Maybe you can videotape yourself in sexy lingerie doing simple everyday things, like studying and working on preps, and have people pay you to watch 😉 bow chica wow wow. Now where did I put my red, laced teddy. . . .

I do like that off shore bear fight idea.

Passive income can come from other sources than capital investment yields. You could develop an iPhone app, write a book, film videos and post them online, patent something and sell the rights, etc. All of those ideas require active involvement up front to create the product, but they yield mostly passive income from that point on.

JESSHUSH!

Who is trained to develop iPhone apps here?
Who has time to write a book?
WHO IS GOING TO STAR IN PORN!?

These ideas are supposed to be realistic things a dental student could do! I mean, at least my illegal off shore bear fighting events idea had legitimacy to them . . .

LOL.. I guess when I started the thread I was thinking dividends, or real estate, etc., but you'd need like a $500k portfolio to generate any appreciable dividend income. But y'alls ideas sound so much more fun.

Don't be obtuse. My point was simply that there are many ways to generate passive income that don't involve large amounts of capital.

Would your rather be obtuse or have acute generalized periodontitis?

I would rather be obtuse.

but thats just me

I'd rather have intelligent conversations with people who understand the subject matter and have the ability to contribute meaningful ideas, but that's just me. Best of luck with your endeavors.

You're taking the internet too seriously.

p.s. have you ever seen a bear without fur?
bear without fur = gargoyle

and back to the thread, the only passive income I can think of that most students could reasonably do is donate plasma. And for those few lucky guys out there you can jerk off at a sperm donation clinic instead of at your computer for a nice chunk of change, if you have the genetic profile.

It is really difficult to qualify to get paid to spank it. I am not tall enough (they want you to be five eleven)! Jerks. And, unlike spank banking, giving plasma is so draining without the reward at the end. Plus the TVs there are way more boring.

IS THAT REALLY A BEAR!? Next time I am illegally offshore bear fighting, I will shave my bear to strike the fear into the other bears... THAT IS THE DEFINITION of passive income

Seriously? you are being too serious, seriously. And, maybe you didn't notice, but I have contributed way more meaningful and realistic/possible/not-impossible/not-imaginable ideas above than you have. At least those ideas I proposed have a track record of success. How many dentists do you know that made an app or wrote a book? Probs very very very very very^9th power few.

Yeah bro, shaved bears are the scariest things on the planet.
I wish I qualified to spank it 🙁
