I am planning a trip to the Caribbean. Does it require that I have a passport? I know Canada is still birth certificate and drivers license, is this the same for the Caribbean? I don't have time to get a passport right now as I am planning on leaving in the next two weeks. I know that if I donated a kidney and plasma that I could get it expedited, but I would rather not have to part with essential organs, and just use what I have.

So Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, passport necessary for US citizen???

If you have a certified birth certificate, you can get your PP essentially instantaneously at the regional passport agency. You have to make an appointment by phone. Also, if you spring $200 extra there are companies that do the trip to the passport agency for you.

yes you need it to get into the DR.

thanks guys, i got on the US and the DR .gov websites, both say i need either passport OR birth certificate and drivers license, then I have to buy a $10 tourist pass.

I just got back from DR (Cabarete) and you are correct, passport or the other combi is fine. You also have to pay that 10 dollar tourist card. Where in DR are you going? I've been there a few times this past year, it's alot of fun, esp if you are into wind-related sports.

cabarete is off the hook. great beach, quaint town, a lot of european tourists, and not many all inclusives...
