PAT cube counting optical illusion

Can somebody explain this optical illusion to me?

Apparently there are:
4 cubes w/2 sides painted
5 cubes w/3 sides painted
2cubes w/4 sides painted


I know that cubes can't just be floating off the ground but that's what it looks like to me. I can't make my eye see past the illusion to figure out what's actually going on... some help would be awesome!

There are 3 cubes stacked right in front of you. Then there are 4 columns of 2s right behind it + 1 more at the end.

Wow I feel silly. Thanks so much, I just got so confused because it looks like the third column of 2 cubes is actually attached to the column of 3.

Yea that's the illusion I guess. I didn't see any of that on the real test though.

hahaha, i had this same problem in a practice test and thought the exact same thing. it still looks like it's floating to me!!!

I literally stared at it for 15 mins lol can't figure it out.

Look for a while and u'll see 12. Remember, no floating, everything has to have the same base level.

And I've heard no optical illusions like this on DAT, but can only tell u from experience after wed lol ........

I had to stare at this forever to figure out that those cubes aren't floating in mid-air...I get it now...that picture sucks!

When I count it, I think everyone can see 10 cubes, but are two extras under the bottom layers? I think I got it... lol it's late now. I'll stare it again tomorrow morning
