you actually don't assume it is lying on a flat surface. Its just an object suspended in air.
If you look closely, you can see that the piece in the back is actually attached somewhere in the middle of the lower bar of the front piece.. as in the answer D. Same thing goes for the little tip.. you have to be able to judge if it lines up exactly of if it is slightly higher.

Ya, no matter which way you look at it, the answer has to be D:
Note that the tip of the front piece rises above the back piece, and the lower part of the front piece also extends below the back piece. Therefore, even if the object were to be rotated upwards so it was parallel to your eyes, the front piece would also extend past the back piece both upwards and downwards.
(I also got this one wrong when I took it, and spent a couple of minutes figuring it out.)

A, C, and E can be immediately disregarded so it leaves only B and D. B can't be correct due to the smaller angle of elevation of the triangle. If the 2D surface would be flat the figure in the back must be above that triangle.
Shouldn't there be a small triangle on the right bottom of picture E?
what i mean by that is when you pass the object through does it have to fit perfectly through the opening? in other words, if there was a light shining through the aperture out of the page at you, does it have to be totally obscured by the object when you insert it? i know D is the best choice but it seems like you could fit the object through A, it just wouldn't be an exact fit
