Ok so I realized something at approximately 3:45am, MANY people have never been exposed to the type of information necessary for success on the PAT. I took Technical Drawing in High school so I have a good grasp of all the concepts especially TFE. I want to start a post to assist those with questions so we can all learn and discuss how to approach these questions. Post your PAT questions here along with image or attachment doc so we can all view and discuss.😀

Why is Choice C Correct and Not Choice A?

Ok so the top views for A and C are similar however as sama said in A the line is not broken all the way through as in C but it has to be broken all the way through since we can not see the concealed line. As far as pistolpete's question, the dashed lines are refering to the rectangular hollow space in the back piece as you can see in the end view to the right. As far as why its not D, if you look at the top view you can see that there are two broken lines running vertically (not the horizontal ones). In D, its a square so all lines are aligned so you can not see any broken lines in D. You can not tell if its a circle or square from the top or side view since these are projections, however the broken lines all the way through in C show that it is correct and thus must be a circle and not the only other viable option which is A. Hope that helped. I took technical drawing in high school so these are a cinch for me. ask me any further questions.

Why is B not a viable answer?

So the answer to your first question is yes, D would be the correct answer had those two broken lines (vertical) not being there on the top view. As for why B is not a viable answer. If you look at the top view again you see that the two vertical broken lines show that the piece below the surface is smaller in diameter to the one on top otherwise we would not see the broken lines at all. Right! So in B, the smaller diameter is on the top and not the bottom so thus in the top view we would not have any broken vertical lines but 4 solid lines. Hope that makes sense.

As I look at these type of questions for the first time, what is the difference between a broken & solid line? Is this something I should have known way back? This is all news to me!

I mean, the other PAT questions seem fine, but when I get to these...I just go HUH???

Here is the difference;

Broken lines:

They are pretty much lines that are there, however you can't see them from the angle you are looking at. Now, those lines could be lines, dents, shapes, other angles, etc.


Actual lines (Solid)

Those are lines, objects, dents, etc, etc that you are able to see.


ps. that is by far the most important issue you need to know... Or the first rule per se for solving Front Top End questions.

You do not have to be exposed to this information prior to now but you need to know it for the exam. The thing that people need to get about these TFE figures is that they are orthographic projections of each other meaning they are 3 dimensional figures that are taken into 2D concepts. When looking you have to mentally put together the figure then look at it from different angles. You need to know which side to look from to get what view. (End view is actually looking at figure from the RIGHT side). So some lines you can not see from different angles while others you can. So the broken line is basically showing you what's not visible directly (kinda like x-ray vision). You are looking through one wall to see what is behind it. Solid lines are what you can see from that particular angle. Each line is visible from every single view Top Front and End (TFE). So if you look at one answer choice and can not see a line that is in any of the views then it probably is incorrect. If you would like to learn how to do Orthographic projections I can explain it here for all to see. Let me know if anybody needs to learn it, it will make all TFE questions a cinch and guarantee you get all or MOST correct. Let me know guys!

I would appreciate it if you could explain Orthographic projections here because as of now, the TFE section is killing me...I'm getting all or MOST INcorrect on my practice problems uggh. I get very confused so I am hoping an understanding of orthographic projections would help me greatly. Thanks!
