what is the thought process for cubes that cannot be seen? I assumed they were there...but apparently it is to be assumed that nothing is there unless it is visible. Is this correct?

How many cubes have two sides painted???

Yeah you can only assume that it is there (when it's hidden by another cube) if that cube is required to make all of the cubes connect on at least one side. the two in the middle that you thought were there are not needed to make the U shape connect.

I'd say 4. Not sure though!
To me it seems like the figure is symmetric with a whole in the middle, which you can't see.

I think its 2, there isnt a cube in the middle 2 places...so just the two on the front left side.

The correct answer is 4...but my gut feeling was that the hole in the middle was filled by a cube and the answer was 8.

Do you see the middle cube you're referring to? No! So, it's not there. Hence, the hole!
