what books do you suggest for studying pathology and pharmacology?

Rapid review (goljian) for path which also can be used for boards. If you want something w/ a bit more depth try Robbins.

Pharm- in my experience there really isnt a single good book for pharm. I used lippincotts and Kaplan but both were just so-so. For the pharm class at my school they werent all that good because they were too brief. For board studying they were too dense. You just cant win.

I'm a fan of "basic and clinical pharmacology" by Katzung. Some people had beefs with the earlier edition but I like the 10th edition quite a bit. An extra benefit is that if your school subscribes to www.accessmedicine.com, it's available there for free.

I've not yet found a great path book either. Robbins is huge, Goljen is a little weird for me, and BRS path is so-so. I'm hoping the new edition of BRS path coming out this fall will be the cure to my woes...

any other suggestions?
my school recommends lippincott for pharm.
I think it's a good one.
but I've one question for ya "curlykid", which level u are ?🙂
just curiosity, because am gonna be in the third level next semester, and I'll study pharm and path in the that semester .
regards

Best book by far for Pharm is Pharm Recall. The power review alone is worth the price of this book. It has everything that you need and nothing that you do not need. It's well written and well organized.

For Path, our course syllabus was the bomb. I still use it from time to time as an attending physician. Many of the people in my class used BRS Pathology if they used a review book. I didn't need one with the syllabus but BRS is great.

I guess I haven't read many of these threads, but is Pharm Recall really the best? I've heard many people say that Pharm Cards were the best, any insight on that? I'm mostly talking about studying for the boards as far as their use

Pharm cards from BRS?

I guess my pharm course was excellent but I found the Pharm cards a total waste of time and unwieldy. Pharm Recall was all I needed and nothing that I didn't need.

to answer your question abooodMD, i'll be a second year 🙂

PharmCards are a good resource---and, they are the ones that are actually PharmCards (there are other similar cards by Lange, etc.). I also have the Katzung Pharm book mentioned in an earlier post and I am happy with it. As far as Path goes, I really recommend Goljan (and, if you can get a hold of his lectures they are fabulous). Other than that, I would stick with your notes (unless they are terrible) seeing as the Path book is huge and you will probably not have time for it anyway.

For Pharmacology, Lippincott's is excellent. Use First Aid to if you have it around, even an older edition. Some of the mnemonics in there helps.

For Pathology, if you are motivated, read Robbin's. Can't go wrong with that. If you are a crammer, Rapid Review with Goljan is great, much nicer looking than BRS. It's in outline form and has nice notes on the margins for quick studying. Images in color too with online resources, unlike BRS. I particularly liked the Robbins' Question book for both path course and Step I, though the difficulty of the questions in there is likely beyond what is expected of you to know in step I.

Lippincott's Pharma and RR Goljan...great books!
