I'm sure many of you have seen the recent NYTimes article mentioning the Columbia dermatologist who makes 4 million a year. Can someone explain to me why dermpath is so lucrative, more lucrative than either just derm or just path? And what's to stop a path person from just doing path exclusively for derm? Why is skin cancer so much more profitable than other types of cancer???

The derm cases can be done in less time but pay just as much. The barrier to doing derm path all day is getting other doctors to send you the skin.

that and the fact that there are no job openings. there is one dermpath faculty member for ALL the hospitals associated with my medical school system. and she looks BEAUTIFUL (she is 50 but she looks 35). and it's going to be a loooong time before she retires....

This doesn't make sense. There are no jobs, hence dermpathers are making bank? Shouldn't the opposite be the case, i.e. there are too few dermpathers for the available positions (especially in academia)?

I think the real lesson to be learned here is that you should go into dermpath. Or derm.

Uhm, no. If you're chasing the buck, you probably shouldn't be in medicine to begin with. Go into path or dermpath if you like solving puzzles.

There's a lot of specialties that involve solving puzzles...there's probably another reason why a disproportionate number of puzzle-lovers are into dermpath 😉
