... who else is considering this specialty and what are your reasons for it?

what are potential drawbacks (for those that are considering this specialty)....

Two big drawbacks to this specialty IMO.

First is the lack of patient contact. Of course this may be an advantage to many students, but I'd imagine most don't want to "hang up their stethoscope" to practice pathology.

Second is the job market. There's a huge debate over it in the path forums, but the job market is relatively tough especially in crowded metropolitan areas
