All hepatitis viruses do not cause any damage to the liver themself. its the body's own cell mediated immune response against the virus that destroys the hepatocytes. T cell mediated attack on the virus infected liver cells results in damage to these cells and thus releasing the liver enzymes, which are then used as markers of liver disease. in immunocompromised patients, hepatitis viruses cause little damage to liver as the body cannot elicit an immune response.
