We usually discuss this from the other point of view, doctors with strong feelings against homosexuality, but I guess it can go both ways.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/23/linda-harvey-warns-against-gay-doctors_n_1027373.html

"...Select your pediatrician very carefully... There are a few homosexual doctors treating kids, there are far more nurses, LPNs, technicians and other health care workers in these lifestyles so you may want to consider writing a letter that you file with your pediatrician that should your child ever be hospitalized, you do not want your child to be treated or cared for by one of these members of the Children’s Hospital gay employees group except in the case of an emergency situation. But for routine in-hospital care where contact with your child would be required, your values should be respected."

Pointing out your sexuality is not professional. If they stop wearing rainbow clips indicating their sexuality then I'll let them treat my rabbits.

So you should never have a picture of yourself and your wife on your desk?

This is a very important thing to consider; I know I personally developed most of my sexual identity from my interactions with my pediatrician during the 18 annual visits and one hospitalization over the course of my adolescence. 🙄

So you should never have a picture of yourself and your wife on your desk?

So if you have a picture of yourself with male colleagues, then you're automatically gay? I said rainbow tag sheesh.🙄

Correct. You should also refer to him/her using gender-neutral terms such as "my spouse/significant other" etc.

And don't mention your pets. I prefer cats and will be mortally offended if you do not.

Coming from someone completely neutral on the situation, this woman is a freakin dumb b*tch. Did she win the Miss Wasilla Alaska beauty pageant also?

Some *******es request not to be treated by black doctors. It's not because they think the doctor will turn their kid black, though.

It may be stupid and narrow-minded, but it is their right to have a choice. Whether we like the choice or not is another story.

how does race have ANYTHING to do with this post.

seriously stfu

It's not just MRSA, you should be worried about your kid catching the gay at hospitals, too. 🙄

And why is this a bad analogy?

^ I was thinking the same lol. I also thought of that analogy while reading.

Homosexuality is biologically determined (SDN does not only stand for Student Doctor Network...neuroscience joke 😉). People are ridiculous.

I sleep well at night knowing that conservatives have been, and always will be, wrong in the eyes of future generations.

I sleep well at night knowing that stereotypes and broad generalizations are alive in well in current generations.

🙄

Actually, it is a common theme in that new generations tend to few the previous one(s) as too conservative in ideology.

Sorry brah it's just the way society works. By nature, social values change. People who want the status quo (aka Conservatives) will always be seen as the "bad guys" by future generations. Conservatives were pro-slavery in the 1850's, anti-women's rights in the 1910's, anti-civil rights in the 1960's, anti-gay rights in the 2000's etc. etc.

Also this isn't a Republican vs. Democrat issue. It's a people who want things to stay the same (Conservative) vs. people who want things to change (Progressive) issue.

someone post a umadbro gif. i'm too lazy to deal with this fool.

I'm angry because you can't equate Black people to homosexuals. You are a racist bigot.

Race is something one can't hide, and can not control on any level. Identical twins are never different races.

Homosexuality is not the same as race. There are no genes for homosexuality. Identical twins are not always the same sexual orientation. That, is a proven fact.

So, yes, I'm mad because you are a racist bigot.

I don't like racism, or homophobia for that matter. But one can not equate the two.

How do you explain the increased incidence then in identical twins, and in siblings for that matter?

It's exactly the same as race, we just don't get URM status or equal rights.

Are gays underrepresented in the medical community?

hmm maybe because they grow up in very similar environments???

Felicitations! You've just won the award for the most incoherent argument on SDN.

You clearly haven't met too many identical twins. My identical twin is ugly. I'm hot. The reason?

Pretty much all twin studies include twins separated at birth to control for the environment.

And it's pretty much established that sexual orientation is the result of the interplay between genes, hormones, and environment. To completely dismiss one of the three is being ignorant.

Neuroscience classes will help your derpping my friend. Also, Google can help 🙂. In case you missed my earlier reference to "SDN", go ahead and search for "Sexually Dimorphic Nucleus". There are also many studies in which drosophila and rats have had their sexual orientation manipulated by genetic means. Also, pre-natal stress levels have also been shown to affect sexual orientation, as well as levels of exposure to estrogen (which is synthesized from testosterone, and thus is responsible for the "masculinity" of the brain). Interesting as well is the noted difference in average finger length disparity between hetero/homosexuals. I love biology and neuroscience 🙂.

without the pins how will we ever know?

Honestly it would would be hard to tell. Scientists and demographers and christian conservatives cannot even come up with a semi-concrete tally so how could you even begin to calculate?

clearly genes play a role in every aspect of our lives. Our reactions to our environment is based on our genetic makeup (e.g. personality). That doesn't mean that one's reaction to one's environment makes one a certain race.

sexual orientation is extremely complex

equating it to race is extremely ignorant

if we can't even figure out how many there are and their representation in medicine then why should they be given URM status? (as you implied in your previous post)

This actually made me lol. Good luck getting into medical school with such atrocious logic and reading comprehension. Med school interview questions are going to absolutely rape you.

Maybe find where in my post I said that the experience of being black is exactly the same as the experience of being gay? I merely pointed out the amusing similarity that qualified black doctors and qualified gay doctors are both occasionally shunned by bigoted patients whom I called *******es. You clearly have a stick up your ass about race, but next time try maybe taking out your feelings on someone who actually deserves it. In the meantime, enjoy being embarrassed by your post on a forum full of people whom you aspire to join in the medical profession but probably never will--not because of your race or sexual orientation, but because of your stupidity.

Btw, a racist is always a bigot. Redundancy ftl bro.

Oh lawd. I highly doubt that he meant they were the same/similar. It was merely a suggestion that people are bigoted in many ways, and it's completely silly to think that something like skin color or sexual orientation would affect the child's development. It's also insane to assume homosexuals are pedophiles. My sample size of 4 homosexual friends tells me that there is a 0% chance that a homosexual is a pedophile 😉.

And race isn't? At what point does a person become "black"? 1 drop of blood? 1/4 genes? 1/2 genes?

Would I be considered black? What if I was adopted by "black" parents and grew up in a "black" community?

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=823605

No one was equating it to race. Rather, it was stated that there is still prejudice from some patients to be treated by an African American physician. I believe the poster was simply pointing out that if there are still individuals with that such prejudice, it is unsurprising that there is bias against gay doctors as well.

Regardless, they are both examples of people's ignorance playing a role in our future careers in health care.

I thought the point of URM was to address disparities of representation in medicine due to hardships and other factors that limit qualification. For anyone who watches the news now, they can see growing up coming to terms with your sexual orientation isn't easy. Compiling bullying and self hate together certainly have an effect on academics as they do on participation in extra-curricular activities.
