are some of you that unconfident in your money making abilities in the future to make this into such a big deal?? What's the most you'd save over a cheaper school? 100k? Eh what's 100k in the course of a life time... I didn't even bother finding out how much tuition was at my interviews (and no, my parents aren't paying for everything so dont' flame me)....

well, $100,000 in loans, spread over 30 years comes back to be a lot... something like $250,000+. So I'd say that is significant... seeing how $250,000 is enough to live very comfortably on for probably 3 or 4 years in retirement, if not more.

but hey, if you want to work longer than you have to, i won't stop you.

100k at .05% is 200k. What's 200k over 30 years? Chump change. No one is working more than they have to, you just dish out a few measly extra bucks during the monthly payments.

Listen SUPERFAG, I wasn't born in Canada...
I have fought lots of people, and competed in many sports across the border Americans are not a lot tougher than Canadians, don't underestimate the nice people of Canada athletics wise.

Superfag? hahahahaha...

I never underestimated the "nice people" of Canada athletics wise. I never remember myself saying that. I never said Americans are a lot tougher than Americans in sports. I merely said what hood are you from in Canada that makes you claim you had a "tough life," or if you meant competing in sports tournaments gave you a hard life? I was only seeking clarification on what you were talking about but I guess you like to stir up beef. I can see why you like to fight. Doesn't matter if you call me childish names because I will most likely never see you in person, talking smack hiding behind your computer. 😉

Alright, shall we get back on topic? 👍

I will repeat this again, not taking into account living, the tuition situation is like this:
Temple Out of state tuition - $38,300
BU anyone tuition - $42,300
How is that signifcantly cheaper??? go back and take stats in University.

If you have money to throw around that might not seem significant. But after 4 years X ~$4K, rise in tuiton every year (by about $2K?), interest off unsubsidized loans, and coming from a low-income background, it seems significant to me. Living in such a place your entire life opens your eyes, I guess.

But, overall, to compare BU & Temple cost-wise, one MUST take into account living expenses.

I'm sure BU is a great school and I'm sure that school will work for those who are attending it. We're all (hopefully) going to make a good amount of money as dentists, right? 👍

Ok, let's move on, superman and Dr.badvibes, you guys should pray that I don't end up at Temple next year, or this will continue in North Philly 😀

Honesty, I am just trying to estimate the difference between the expensive Boston schools and Temple, because I will have the chance pick from these schools. Here is what I collect from this thread so far, please help me fill in the rest and put this argument to rest.

Expensive Boston schools
Tuition - 42,000
Education expenses (instruments, insurance, textbooks, computers) - 10,000
Living expenses (rent, food, transportation) - 25,000
approximat total per year - 77,000

Temple
Tuition - 38,000
Education expenses (instruments, insurance, textbooks, computers) - 10,000
Living expenses (rent, food, transportation) - ????
approximat Total per year

$200,000 is not chump change if you ask me. find me someone who thinks a year to a year and half's salary is chump change.

I think by this point most of us realize the debt we're getting into, and yes most of us realize that it won't be easy to pay them back. For those of you who keep stressing it - get a life and let US worry about our future. For some of us, there is no other choice than to go to an expensive private school, but we're dedicated to fulfilling our dreams. We worry enough about the loans on our own, so stop throwing it in our faces every chance you get -ESPECIALLY SOME PEOPLE ON HERE!!!

Hey Moderators, I was just wondering, if we get a petition of quite a few ppl on SDN, is it possible to permanantly ban a particularly annoying member? I know many people would appreciate this.

First of all, I dont know how textbooks work at BU, but at Temple its like undergrad where every class has a syllabus that has the required books to buy.

So what happens is that you ask the sophmore students which books to buy and you will soon find out that there are not many books you need to buy....Heck, I only spent something like $250 the entire year on books!!! Also, this gives you the freedom to buy used books online as well.

About computers....Im sorry but spending over $2000 on a mandatory laptop is absurd!!! I got a state of the art laptop from Dell for only $750!!

So I think you can downsize Temple's education expense by $2000 right off the bat.

About living expenses.....you will pay 15K at Temple per year. And thats not living in the dumps or anything.....Thats living VERY VERY WELL.....it includes living in a very nice area close to the school, 1 bedroom apt where you'll get a gym, pool, tennis court (if you live at Summit), internet, cable tv, parking, etc. That figure also leaves enough money to go out a lot and extra cash for clothes, and other material goods and of course food.

So 4K on tuition, $2K on educaitonal expenses and 10K on living.....you save about 15K per year at Temple.......u live much better....but most importantly, you cant deny the dental education you get at Temple compared to BU....Temple's clinical education cannot be disputed....any dentist in the entire country will tell u that. The choice is obvious.

Im suprised that TOdentist wants to kick me off these boards....

lemme tell everyone a story about her:

About 4 months ago, TOdentist adds her beloved Dr.BadVibes onto his MSN list to ask for advice for dental schools....of course Dr.BadVibes loved to help and gave her all the advice he could......then TOdentist was telling Dr.BadVibes how much she hated BU.....how she thought it was such a crappy school when she interviewed there, and every night she prays that she gets off the waitlist at Case Western, and how she regrets that BU is her only choice.

Not only did Dr.BadVibes listen to her complaints and offer his honest advice, he also gave her a contact of a friend he has at BU who was also from Toronto that could help her with the transition of a Toronto girl to Boston University. So i guess after that is was "thanks for the help, now get lost creep". Now where is that Canadian comradery???

oh the pain....the pain 😱

Don't even make me start.......

You know what, I've kept my calm. First of all superstar, the only reason I even added you on to my MSN was becuase you went to the same undergrad school as me, furthermore, I never ever said that I hated BU...the only reason I have an issue with BU is the high cost of tuition, and till this day I am somewhat scared of the loans...I don't need you to throw it in my face everyday. The only somewhat negative thing I ever said about BU was that the building was a lot older than I expected and that the tour guide vs. the student we had lunch with told us totally different stories.
Yes I do love Case, and it has always been my first choice for dents, even before I visited any of the schools. By the way Einstein, Case is not THAT much cheaper than BU! Speaking of stories from the past I could really really start a lot on here from what people have told me about you from a) undergrad and b) SDN. But I won't, I'm aspiring to become a professional so I won't even go there. My only point is that we're already anxious about the loans, so stop rubbing it in. Secondly, if you're doing fine with your loans....good for you, leave the rest of us alone. Man are u that miserable that you have to ruin it for other people? Finally at no point did you ever offer me useful advice, except for don't go to BU...lol at the beginning you actually had me doubting BU and dents all together.

Oh yea, and how did you know I was referring to you? Are you that notoriously hated?

On the other hand, Temple's dental school is situated right in the ghetto. The admission coordinator, Brian Hahn, spent 20 minutes at our interview talking about safety, something I've never heard happening at other schools. Apparently, keeping a quarter in your car will get your windows smashed! You also get to carry a large, heavy metal toolbox on wheels all day during clinics, and have to spend your nights preparing your own lab work because the school is too cheap to send the stuff to a lab (or apparently this is for your own experience, which I doubt. It makes no sense for a dentist to do his own lab work). Also, if any of your patients refuse to pay at the end of treatment, you'll have to refund the school out of your own pocket! This is supposed to be for your own experience, but you have no access to their credit card info at all. All your patients there will be poor, lower class citizens. The entire area around the school is black (something that does not bother me in the least), but the town is so heavily segregated, that this is worth pointing out. Also 80% of the class is made up of men, so prepare to spend the next four years of our life with a bunch of dudes.

The point is every school has its draw backs. I personally think BU is just as good as Temple, just depends on what you’re looking for.

After reading through this entire thing I have found a few things to be quite pathetic. First of all it looked like this thread was just about getting advice on paying back loans and then it turned into people bashing other peoples schools. I understand everyone is entiled to their own opinion but I do not understand why someone would be so passionate about telling people to not attend a particular school that they do not even go to in the first place. If someone wants to go to a school then so be it and it really shouldn't be your business. Do I care if someone goes to a more expensive school than me? No, not at all, we are all going into a great field and going to be dentists anyways. And never would I bash someone for going to a more expensive school or even a school that I may not have liked. It just doesnt make sense to me really. And for your information I chose to go to a school which costs a good amount of money more than my other choice. Why? Because my friends and family are there and I feel extremely comfortable there among many other things. If you think I am stupid for that then so be it. I could careless. I will deal with paying off the extra money myself.

Oh and shouldnt most of you have something better to do than make 20 posts in an hour (BadVibes). Go outside, go to the gym or how about study.

Oh man....I wished I saved that MSN conversation we had.....Preeti, how can you just lie like that in my face!!!

You totally bashed BU....even worse than I do on these forums....you kept on going how you got such a bad vibe from your interview about the school and the admin staff....and how much you hated the school and thought it was all about show......you said you really regretted not applying to other schools cause BU was your only choice.....i really cant believe you can come on here and totally lie about it.....surprising!

And about my advice....I only told you not to goto BU over Case.....I didnt once say not to goto BU at all....I dont make decisions for people....I give my opinion and what I know and always advocate letting people find out for themselves.....oh man, its inconsiderate people like that really make me regret trying to help other people that add me on their MSN list (you're not the first).

And about the loans...when did I direct this thread towards you??? it was a general thread....you didnt have to read it nor did you have to reply.....if its not what you wanted to hear/read, just ignore it. Simple as that sweetheart.

Hey did I ever say BU is my fav school? There are a lot of things I do not like about BU..and probably the same would apply to every school. But the fact is that BU is givin me a shot that no other school is givin me. If it were up to me, you're right, I'd probably go to a different school, for a variety of different reasons. Did I ever say that Im in love with BU...although I probably should be!

Like I said before....the only help you provided for me was telling me not to go to BU...and how I'd be so screwed paying the loans back. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Wait wait wait.....when did BU's campus all of a suddent land itself in Conneticut or Rosedale???

About the labwork...well a dentist should obviously know how to do labwork, but you're right, doing it all is a bit too much.....

about paying out of your own pocket....if you are careless this will happen to you. if you are organized about it, it wont happen. Its good practice to develop these habits cause when you are in your own private practice, your gonna have to deal with patients not paying you as well.

And if you think Philly is the only segregated area, hahahahah....Welcome to the USofA my clueless Canadian friend. US history is based on segregation, and I can tell you this, Boston aint no exception......

Once again Preeti....I only told you not to goto BU over Case......I never once said not to goto BU at all......I actually told you that if BU is your only choice, might as well go, didnt I?

ALso, when i said you would have trouble paying back your loans, it was because you said that no matter what you had to come back to Canada right after graduation....so having a half million Canadian dollar debt with interest on top of that and making a Canadian income which is heavily taxed, I just was telling you to goto a cheaper school......sorry for giving you realistic advice.

And about giving you help.....not only did i waste my PERSONAL time listening to you and chatting wiht you on MSN, I also gave you the contact of my friend at BU so she could help you with the transition to Boston....I thought that was very helpful.

Remember Preeti, I didnt have to do any of this, becasue i didnt get anything out of it. Cheers again for the appreciation!!!

BV, thanks for the contact (however I already know a couple of guys at BU, that also know her)...but again thanks! I just don't know why you have to be so negative all the time. We talked on MSN max twice...but thanks for the precious time...

Not mentioning any names...but it is a general consensus that you're a LOSER...let's leave it at that! When I first brought up ur name, people told me to keep my distance from you because there is nothing positive about you!

Hmmm lets see are the 6000 people at the school losers....or could you be the problem??? Figure that one out!
