Hi all,

If I continue on this journey to vet school, I am short 4 classes and would need to retake Bio I. Anyway, already have two bachelors, so enrolling in an actual degree program doesn't make much sense to me except for the fact that degree students get financial aid. If you took your pre reqs after finishing a degree as a non degree student, how did you end up paying for them? Private loans? Out of pocket? Combo?

I have a CC that is close to home and fairly inexpensive ($90/credit) and I could feasibly go there to complete Physics I, II, and Bio I. However, I am seeing a trend for Genetics and Biochem should be done at 4 year university. I have a couple options there, could take them at UMaine or take them online through UNE, but they're more pricey.

Suggestions?

I already have a degree and have been taking my prereqs as a non-degree seeking student and I pay for them out of pocket.

Some schools (not sure if all) require Biochemistry and Genetics to be taken at a 4-year university. I don't know about UMaine but some 4-years have open enrollment. Basically you crash the class and have to get an add code from the professor. In California it's slightly more expensive to take a class open enrollment than as a degree seeking student. I'm not sure if it's similar elsewhere.

I have two degrees and I was able to get financial aid when completing the prerequisites for vet school. At the community college it was no issue but when I went to a university I had to appeal financial aid due to the 150% rule ( you should look it up to see if it applies to you).

Since you're paying out of pocket, are you allowed to do it as a payment plan? When I spoke with UNE, private 4 year school here in Maine, about their online Biochem and Genetics classes the payment is to be paid in full at the time of registration and they're like 1400 a piece :-/ But I really like the idea of the set up, online, student paced. I'll have to figure it out if I go that route...

If you don't mind me asking LuckySpartan, what two degrees do you have? I have two bachelors, so I think I might be maxed out as far as financial aid goes for undergraduate level courses, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the tip.

I have two bachelors as well, one in Business Management and another in Fashion Marketing.

Some schools have the payment plan option, but some don't. My UG university does for all semesters, but I took some summer classes at another school, and for summer semester, they required full payment before school started. Look around and see what other online options you might have.

Degree seeking students pay a flat semester charge. Non degree students pay a per credit charge, which breaks down to be slightly more expensive. Usually online classes have as additional fee.

I pay in full at the time of registration and I've never asked if there is a payment plan. Can't help you with that one 😵

Yes, this is how it is in CA. It's definitely more expensive to pay per credit!
