What are the functions of endrophonium beside inhibiting the Ach Esterase?

This is produced in the body?or it's simply the chemical used to see if someone has something like Myestinea gravis

Causes and symptoms of MS-
Cause is just the antibodies for the Ach receptors right?

WIth regard to Sickle Cell Anemia--

How is it diagnosed in the Lab? more than 1 way?

These are fairly simple questions to get answers to without having other people do the answers for you.

The mother of information regarding sickle cell disease: http://www.scinfo.org/

for the others check out some neurology books.

Google is a fabulous source to start getting information... not to mention medline, emedicine, etc.

There are a few other diseases caused by mutations to genes coding for Hb.

Edrophonium is a drug that is a Type 1 AchE inhibitor. The type 1 AchEI's are very short acting. This allows Edrophonium or Tensilon to be a good diagnostic agent. Myasthenia Gravis is a disease that shows flares and periods of more quiescence. The disease is characterized by autoantibodies to the nicotinic receptors at the skeletal motor end plate. So, these patients are often treated with AchEI's like neostigmine. AchEI's contrary to what you might think cause muscle paralysis and weakness. However, this is exactly what myasthenia gravis causes. So, when patients with myasthenia gravis present with muscle weakness you are left with the question: Are they overmedicated or are they having a flare. You can decide this by giving edrophonium. If you give it and it makes their symptoms better, then they are having a flare. If you give it and it makes their symptoms worse, they are overmedicated. The reason edrophonium is used is that it only lasts about 10-15 minutes. So, if you make their symptoms worse it is very short-lived. Hope that helps.

I think an Hb electrophoresis will reveal a pattern with a disproportionate percentage of HB S and less HB A.

You can also do a blood smear and look for sickled RBCs

Cool thanks 🙂

It's for a PBL problem, and the symptoms only manifested during the evening, and disappeared after a nights rest.

Any reason why?

what are the symptoms? we need more info about the case to be able to help.
