PChem, AChem

How important is taking PChem or AChem? I know Penn recommends PChem, but I really don't wanna take it.

only if you have interest. It won't help or hurt you get in, unless you flunk it.

Take it if you are a chem major or you really are interested in them. Otherwise you are better off taking Biology courses.

Even if Penn recommends taking Pchem, I think you'd be in the minority of applicants if you took it. I wouldn't try it unless you know you're really good at that combo of math/chemistry/physics. I'd bet Penn would be less concerned with your transcript not having Pchem than having Pchem with a bad grade. I really hated that class. I had to study 10x harder than Bio classes just to struggle my way through.

Lets just say my A's in PChem were brought up at every single interview.... the looks on the faces of the doctors all showed instant acceptance.... " wow, A's in Pchem 1 and 2, dental school material will never get that hard"

but... i am a chem major though... do not take these classes for fun... not fun at all

I agree. As a chem major I decided to take a Pchem/Group Theory tutorial at my school. It's def. not something to take lightly but if you do well the ADCOMS would be pretty impressed. It was brought up at my interviews too.

I took A-Chem and actually liked it a lot. The lab portion of the class is quantitative and fairly difficult (iirc, in ours we were marked down for being ~5mg off of the expected yield), but I also worked in an analytical lab for a summer so it was not too difficult.

I am a biochem major, and was thus required to take Pchem and Achem - at this time I can safely say since I am graduating this semester, that they were by FAR the hardest classes that I had to take, and by no means would I ever suggest taking them unless required by a major.
